Who are we when we are by ourselves or with a life partner 24/7/365? • What will you do with the time that you used to work and interact with people for roughly 2000 hours a year? • Do you already know? • Still have children or grandchildren in the home? • Caring for a loved one? • Traveling, recovering, traveling, recovering? • Watching TV and catching up on all the shows you missed because you were working? • What will it be?
Who are we when we are just by ourselves?Are we kind to ourselves and others? Do we remember how to enjoy ourselves, to play? • What did work provide us besides money? • Friends? • Associates we enjoyed talking to? • New ideas? • Meetings we enjoyed disliking and complaining about? • Something to do with our time?
THERE IS A DANGER • If we aren’t careful, we can turn into grumpy old men and women? • If we feel down/depressed/anxious, we may blame it on other people, especially those we love the most. • We may not recognize that we are in an adjustment phase and it feels disorienting and unpleasant • We may not listen to our loved ones when they tell us we’ve changed and not for the better • We may feel sick a lot more often than we used to
Why? • Mood changes are normal in adjustment periods. • Not a license • Behavior changes are normal for a period of time. (6 months – 1 year) • BUT WE CAN REDUCE THE IMPACT

Keep learning • New skills • New musical instruments’ • New languages • How to start a new career and do it • Go back to school
Socialization • Meet new people –younger and older’ • Join a book club • So social sports organization like a tennis club, golf, pickleball • Work with others in something like Habitat or Humanity • Get involved like you couldn’t before because of work
Volition-ability to exert your will • You do what you want to do because you are in charge of your life in a way you’ve never been before. • Many more things are your choice your will.
UNDERSTAND you need to make time • Make time for yourself alone • Design time for a significant other • Make time for old and new friends • These are your hours, days, weeks and years • Laugh • Love • Enjoy • Create • Work in new ways
Discover new things • About yourself and others • See the world in new ways • Everything is out there if you think outside the old box. • You don’t have to be a millionaire to maximize the joy of living • You don’t have to make a plan, but it is likely to get you where you want to go with a good map that you created for yourself.
