Portal - A doorway, entrance, or gate, especially one that is large and imposing. • Enterprise Portal – A server used by institutions to build a gateway, providing access to and interaction with relevant information, applications and processes for select targeted audiences, delivered in a highly personalized manner. What is uPortal? • uPortal is a free, sharable portal under development by institutions of higher-education. • Project run by the JASIG organization (Java Architectures Special Interest Group) • Version 1 released in July 2000 • Version 3 released in July 2008 • Currently, over 25 institutions and several commercial entities contribute to the uPortal project Information Supplied by Unicon

For their success many things must be considered: • Do I want an open, expandable system or simply a packaged system? • What is the primary role of the portal? • What systems do I want to integrate with and how? • Do I plan to push users to the portal and how? • Who will be the first user groups? • What information do I want the users to access? • How much customization by the user do I want to allow and maintain? • How do I push new channels to the users? • Are their certain channels I don’t want the user to remove? • On what OS do I want to implement? • What application server do I want to use? • What portal database server do I want to use? • How will I handle older browsers? • What will it cost to implement? • What will be the on going cost? The RFP • uPortal 1. uPortal Specifications: The vendor must provide the following services: • Configuration and integration with CAS • Configuration and integration with an RDBMS (Fort Lewis College has an Oracle Site license and can also support MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server) • Development and installation of a custom software “Skin” using uPortal’s standard template • Installation and configuration of portlets/channels in support of the college’s communications needs • Documentation of above configurations and integrations

Enterprise Directory Service Specifications: • The vendor must provide the following services or state reasons why Active Directory will adequately support uPortal, CAS, and future directory needs. • Installation and configuration with eduPerson Object Class Specification (200712) • Configuration and integration with uPortal • Configuration and integration with CAS • Documentation of above configurations and integrations

  16. The RFP • D. HARDWARE • 1. Components • Fort Lewis College will provide suitable hardware and systems software platform(s) for both production and development systems as agreed upon with vendor.

Delivery and Installation Schedule • The system must be delivered and installed on campus by the following dates: • 3/7/2008 Planning process with vendor complete. • 6/2/2008 Web Portal/SSO systems ready for testing/use by summer students. • 9/1/2008 Web Portal/SSO systems ready for general student use. • The Vendor must provide Fort Lewis College with system implementation and installation support and assistance. Please describe the services you will provide. Associated costs for these services must be specified in the Quotation section of the Vendor's response.

  18. The RFP • B. TRAINING PROGRAM • The vendor must provide on-site training for no less than 10 people for uPortal Administrators and Developers. Course topics should include: • uPortal Overview • Authentication and Authorization • Groups and Permissions Framework • Aggregated and Template Layouts • Administrative Channels • Permission Manager • Accessing User Attributes and Information • The vendor must also provide Portal System Administrator training. The training may be remote and should include topics such as: • Supporting Applications • Maintenance including backups • Troubleshooting

Associated costs for the program services must be specified in the Quotation section of the Vendor's response. • D. SYSTEM USER GROUP • Please indicate if there is an established system user group, what part the user group plays in system development, and how often the user group meets.
