  1. Dan Pacheco Founder O’Reilly Tools of Change in Publishing Conference February 2010

  2. What is Printcasting? Knight News Challenge project that democratizes print publishing process. Objectives: Let anyone create a printable magazine. No software or design skills required. Use your own content, or remix content from others. Make print advertising easy, fun & affordable. If you can e-mail or post to a blog, you can place ads that appear in printed magazines. 1 2

  3. Make a magazine like this in just 5 minutes …

  4. How Printcasting Works

  5. Self-serve ad tool Advertisers click a button, fill out a form and enter credit card. Done! Ads start at $10 per edition. Publisher can mark up rate.

  6. Print, Online, Mobile, and … ? • Every Printcast has an automatically generated Wb site that is promoted from the print edition. • Looks great on home printer, and … • Looks great on an iPhone, and will only get better. • Future: Kindle, ePub, and who knows what else. • In other words, it’s “Printable-casting”

  7. We’re hyperlocal. Long-time blogger in Bakersfield who covers local cross-country races.

  8. We’re hyperlocal, and global • Publishers come from all over the world • 35 countries, and 28 states in U.S. • Spanish version is on the way, through partnerships (starting with La República in Perú)

  9. HP Print App in Development Selected as one of a handful of developers to create a “Print App” for new HP Web-connected printers.

  10. It started with print …

  11. … but can do much more • Printcasting can be a digital content processor that can create many design-dependent outputs, such as … • E-readers and mobile interfaces • E-mail newsletters • Print-on-demand books • Podcasts & video documentaries • Targeted ad campaigns • And even an entire Web site

  12. “Everycasting” and our future direction

  13. Meet Joe, and Joe’s blog Jose is all about running. He’s posted 500 entries on his WordPress blog in just 2 years, including 60,000 photos. He wants his site to look better, but knows nothing about design and has little time.

  14. Everycasting to the Rescue! Joe goes to Everycasting and puts in his blog’s RSS feed. He chooses some design styles he likes, then customizes them by uploading his logo. Running News Site Name: Publisher name: Joe Runner RSS URL: http://joesrunningworld.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/ Brew up a … Site design Printcast Mobile site eBook

  15. Meet Joe’s new Web site • Now Joe’s site looks just as professional as The New York Times. • It can work as its own standalone site, or take over the design of his existing site through inclusion of a simple Web widget. • But it’s more than just a Web site …

  16. It’s a printable E-Edition, too The same design elements flow into a Printcast which is automatically promoted from the new site (what we do now). We’ve learned that publishers respond well to the idea of getting an electronic print edition promoted from their Web sites, vs. the idea of turning your blog into a magazine. The Web is still the most important platform, and people want a print option for certain uses.

  17. Meet Joe’s New Magazine • The same stories and design elements automatically flow into his Printcast.

  18. Meet Joe’s iPhone Site • We can sniff out which device you’re using to visit Joe’s site and optimize the interface for that device. • Joe doesn’t have to do anything to make this happen other than check a box.

  19. Meet Joe’s eBook • We can output to standard eBook formats. • That includes Apple’s future iPad, thanks to their adoption of the open ePub format.

  20. Joe is Now a Media Mogul Print Mobile eReaders Web

  21. Who else is like Joe? • Millions of bloggers, of course. But also … • Large organizations with content and Web departments that start every conversation with “no, we can’t do that.” • Corporate communications departments. • Media companies of all sizes that need to do more, but with less. • Governments at all levels (city, county, state, federal, and departments within them). • In short, everyone!

  22. Looking Ahead • We’re working under a grant from the Knight News Challenge which ends in June. Everything will then be open-sourced. • Plans are to spin off as a new company and provide customized, private-label “Everycasting” services for publishers. • And yes, we’re looking for investors, too!
