  3. General Information • Cost per person is $10.00 and $20.00 per vehicle • Primary visitation runs from May 1st to September 15th. Visitation is lowest in the winter months • Mount McKinley is the highest mountain on the north American continent, standing at 20,320 feet • Denali is about 6,028,924 acres big, or slightly bigger than the state of Massachusetts • Roughly 30 million people visit this park every year, and most of those by bus • 32,000 climbers have attempted to climb Denali with about a 40% success rate. 100 have died including 11 in 1992. • In terms of vertical relief or elevation from base to summit (18,000 feet) Denali is the tallest mountain in the world.

  4. General Information (continued) • Its location and height make it one of the coldest mountains on earth. • In May, the night-time temperatures on the upper slopes can reach -30 to -40 degrees, while in the winter it can reach -95 degrees or lower with winds up to 150 mph. • Given the size of the mountain, it can create its own weather.

  5. History • Athapaskan people moved from the north to the center of Alaska by the mountains. • Archaeologists found camps along the mountains • They also found fossils of dinosaurs along the mountain side • Asian people crossed from the Bering land bridge to the national park area and settled there • Founded in 1917

  9. Geology (continued) • There are Three major Glaciers called Kahiltna, Muldrow, and Ruth Glaciers. • Alaska has 40 named glaciers around the Alaska mountain range in the park. • Glaciers play an important role of the development of Denali National Park and Reserve • The Alaska Range in which it is located has the highest mountains in North America
