  1. The Development and Recap LO: To become familiar with the musical features of the development and recapitulation section of the Mozart Piano Sonata.

Starter • Using a blank score, identify the following features in the exposition. • APPOGGIATURA • FIRST SUBJECT • PERFECT CADENCE • SECOND SUBJECT • KEY CHANGES Bb AND F • CODETTA • SUSPENSION 2. List three features of the piece which are typical of the Classical period in history. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  3. The development • Opens like the beginning • Three motifs, the run (x), the lean (y) and a hoop figure (z). Mark in your score. • Now circle where the (z) has been used in 63-66. • There is also the string of thirds idea from the exposition. We will see how this is developed later.   4. The Development • The purpose of the development in sonata form was to take much of what appears in the exposition and create new and interesting material with it. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

The harmony in the development • Harmonically, what was the features of opening of the exposition? • Uses mainly chords I, ii, IV, V and vi • Bar 63 – where does this material come from? • Analyse the chords in the left in Bars 64-66.   6. Bar 68 – Gm and C7 then F diminished at Bar 69.This appears to be establishing F major. However, what is the key at 71? • F minor • Very famous bass-line here. • Alberti bass – very typical of the Classical period. • What key are we in by 81?   7. Between 81-86 it goes between Gm and D. • Neopolitan 6th chords. Chord based on the flattened second degree of the scale. Feature of Classical music. Mark it into your score. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  8. What chords are used at 87-88? • F and F7. • Until 94, the harmony is dominant preparation – there are lots of F7 chords here. This brings us back to what key at 94? LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  9. The Recapitulation • The job of the recapitulation is to create symmetry by repeating the exposition. However, the key should stay in the tonic now. • The recap begins at the anacrusis before 94. What key? LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  10. At 107 what is the chord and in what key? • At 108 what is the chord? • And 109? • These are all unstable sevenths that then lead back to the correct seventh, that of V of Bb, the tonic key. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  12. At 135, the CODA appears. It is the same as 39-41 but in the tonic. • Circle of fifths harmony. Analyse the chords in 143-146. Why might this be called the circle of fifths. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  13. How is the melodic material developed? • Three motifs, the run (x), the lean (y) and a hoop figure (z). Don’t forget the string of thirds too. • What motif at 75 and how is it different? • And at 77? • What about at 79? How is this different? • This is known as intervallic augmentation.   15. Cheeky development in the Coda • Same as 39-45 but in what key now? • Hoop idea at 139. What happens to the interval at144 and rhythm at 147? What is the effect of this? • What feature at 152? LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  16. A few extra points • Bar 73 – big interval, showing off range of piano – it went no higher in Mozart’s time. • Bar 165 – pattern changed to avoid a G as this was beyond the piano’s range. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.

  17. Consolidation test • Answer the questions. Try where possible, not to use the score. Mark with an asterix the questions that you has to use the score for. • A – 16-18 marks • C – 13 marks • E – 11 marks. LO: to know the features of the development and recapitulation of the Mozart Sonata.
