Important “Things” Coming Home at Night • Homework • Students have reading and math homework. • Reading homework will be based on independent, at-home reading by completing graphic organizers, journal responses, Time for Kids (which we will provide) etc. • I will be giving you information (homework) on how to help your child at home. • Math homework will depend on what we are doing in class that day. • Continue to check my website and your child’s planner for updates.
Important “Things” Coming Home at Night • Friday Letter • Every Friday, your child will be bringing home their writing journal that will include a “Friday Letter” in which they will write to inform you of some of what they have learned and activities they were involved in throughout the week. Within the letter, they will ask you two questions that you will respond to in writing (in your own letter on the next page). Please print so that your child can read your writing more easily, and please help your child read your responses. The journal should be returned to school no later than Tuesday.
Student Planners • All homework assignments, as well as other important information is recorded in their planner. • Parents, please make sure you are looking at the homework assignments and checking that your child has completed them. I want you to be “in the know.”
Math • What can you do to help your child in math? • Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts with your child everynight! • Use flash cards • Play a math game (available commercially or online). • Use the web • Check out www.lsalvatore.weebly.com for math activities. • Go on Compass Learning: http://www.compasslearningodyssey.com
Math Belts • Math Belts are given every Tuesday • Math Fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division • 95% Accuracy must be met before they are able to move on • 0,1,2 – 3,4,5 – 6,7,8 – 9,10,11,12 • Goal – Black Belt in all four operations
Reading • What is reading and reading comprehension? • The essence of reading is extracting meaning from written print. • What can you do to help your child read? • Read with your child every day! • Talk about what you read; summarize, question, debate, predict, compare, etc. • Make it fun! Find their interests and foster them. Text is everywhere: magazines, comics, novels, etc.
Grades Although your child will not be receiving the traditional letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) on report cards, I always give feedback on assignments, typically in the form of comments and a score. I use these scores, other data, and classroom observations to determine the marks on interims and report cards.
AR • Accelerated Reader is a supplemental tool designed to encourage students to choose and read books independently at the appropriate level. • Students take a short, computerized comprehension test after reading a book, which earns points toward their goal. • AR levels and goals are based on the results of the STAR reading test as well as teacher and student input.
