Century II Campaign Endowed Equipment Fund (C2E2) Purpose: Provide funding to invest in equipment related to research and to improve the research efforts of faculty, staff, and students campus-wide. Award amount: $5,000+ per award Submission timeline: Proposal submission, October (3rd week) Announced via: • Tech Today • Sent electronically to departments • VPR website C2E2

  16. Bhakta Rath Research Award Program Deadline: First week in March Program Description: The Bhakta Rath Research Award, established in 2010 by an endowment from Dr. Bhakta B. Rath and his wife, SushamaRath, offers an opportunity to promote and reward excellence in scientific and engineering research in the field of physical and natural sciences and engineering. PI Eligibility: Recipients of this award will be a PhD graduate student and their collaborating Michigan Tech faculty member.  Award Amount: The award will consist of a plaque and a $2,000 cash award, to be presented to and shared by the graduate student and the faculty member. Michigan Tech Research Award Program Deadline: Second week in March Program Description: The Michigan Tech Research Award offers an opportunity for an individual to be recognized for outstanding achievement in research. The term 'research' is to be interpreted broadly to mean scholarly endeavor.  The nomination should be based on the impact that a person has made toward advancement of knowledge, or the state of scholarship as evidenced by either a sustained productive scholarly endeavor or a single noteworthy breakthrough in research results.   18. Faculty Fellow Program Program Deadline: Third week in February Program Description: The Faculty Fellow Program is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research. The program: • expands familiarity with sponsored program administration and strategic planning among the faculty; • develops leadership capacity among the faculty; and • improves sponsored programs administration and strategic planning through faculty input. Faculty (including research faculty) participating in the program receive 40 percent salary support from the VPR Office and are released from all teaching obligations during the term of the appointment. Appointments: Appointments are for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year pending Department/School approval. Faculty Fellow Program

Research Excellence Fund (REF)Research Seed (RS) Program Deadline: First week in March Program Description: Typical REF-RS projects will develop preliminary data to be used in subsequent proposals to outside funding sources, support pilot studies developing new research methods or procedures, or support other activity leading to the development of an externally recognized and funded research program.  PI Eligibility: Untenured tenure-track academic faculty and research faculty members in any academic unit. Award Amount: Grants may be up to $40,000 per year, with an expected average award of $30,000 per year. Research Seed

Research Excellence Fund (REF)Infrastructure Enhancement (IE) Program Deadline: First week in March Program Description: REF Infrastructure Enhancement (REF-IE) grants are designed to provide Departments/Schools and Research Centers/Institutes with resources to develop the infrastructure necessary to support sponsored research and graduate student education. Funded projects will typically focus on acquisition of equipment, enhancement of laboratory facilities, or enhancement of administrative support structure to expand the research capability of the unit.   PI Eligibility: Each department, school, center, and institute is allowed to designated/sponsor an academic faculty as the PI. Award Amount: Grants may be up to $50,000. Infrastructure Enhancement

Research Excellence Fund (REF)Commercialization Milestone Grant (CMG) Program Deadline: Rolling deadline Program Description: Commercialization Milestone grants (CMG) are designed to provide faculty and student inventors a means to achieve a specific step or steps toward de-risking, or other tangible demonstrations of commercial viability of an early stage technology. Funded projects will typically focus on specific milestones within a step-wise progression designed to demonstrate how the early stage technology provides a viable solution to a validated market opportunity.  Project Eligibility: To be eligible for a Commercialization Milestone Grant the technology to be commercialized must be the subject of an invention disclosure submitted to the Office of Innovation & Industry Engagement by Michigan Tech faculty, staff, or students. Award Amount: Grants may be up to $20,000 per year. Commercialization Milestone

Research Excellence Fund (REF)Scholarship and Creativity Grant (SCG) Program Deadline: First week in March Program Description: The REF Scholarship and Creativity Grant (SCG) provides support to encourage faculty to engage in scholarly research, learning, and creative activities to enhance professional development.  SCG awards primarily support scholarly projects undertaken by faculty in disciplines identified by NSF as “non-science and engineering fields.” These are primarily within the humanities, social sciences, arts, education, and business. PI Eligibility: SCG awards are available to faculty at any level Award Amount: Grants will range up to $15,000, with an expected average of less than $10,000. Scholarship and Creativity

Portage Health Foundation (PHF) Awards Program Description: The Portage Health Foundation (PHF) and the Vice President for Research have committed to $220,000 of internal research awards to health-oriented researchers. The following categories are eligible for the PHF research awards: • REF-IE • REF-RS • REF-CMG • Core Facilities • PHF Mid-Career (MC) Portage Health Research Awards

PHFMid-Career (MC) Program Deadline: First week in March Program Description: Typical PHF-MC projects will advance mid-career research designed to collect impactful preliminary data to be competitive for NIH R01 grants or other external funding; provide bridge/seed funding for faculty with strong records of external funding for health-orientated work; provide seed funding for health-oriented faculty that have traditional pursued non-NIH funding agencies but are committed to pursing NIH R01 funding; and elevate Michigan Tech’s health-research visibility to state and federal officials who impact policy and determine funding. PI Eligibility: Open to tenured faculty (associates and full professors) who have an active NIH grant and/or consistent history of external funding with NIH or a related agency. Award Amount: Grants may be up to $15,000 per year, with an expected average award of 10,000 per year. Mid-Career

Superior Ideas Purpose: Superior Ideas is Michigan Tech’s crowdfunding platform used to raise funds for small, high-quality research and public service projects that are not normally suited for grant funding. Funds are raised through many small donations Researchers can submit their project online, outlining their research goals and need for funding. After approval, the project will then appear on the site and can begin accepting donations. The project creator receives all donations raised, regardless if the funding goal is not met. www.superiorideas.org Superior Ideas

Research Centers and Institutes Over 20 different Research Centers and Institutes Potential benefits of affiliating with a Center/Institute: • Foster and promote interdisciplinary research & education around a particular theme • Offer shared facilities, equipment, and resources to promote activities of the affiliated faculty • Provide shared administrative support to assist faculty in scholarly activities • Encourage collaboration via seminars, speakers, travel assistance, graduate student talks, and related activity • Provide limited financial assistance for cost sharing, equipment time, travel, or other center-building activities Centers and Institutes

Core Facilities A core facility is:  a collection of equipment identified by the University as essential to high priority research activities, usually interdisciplinary activities, that span multiple departments, schools, centers, and institutes. These typically require dedicated skilled technical staff and may be located in contiguous space or be spread among several different physical locations. Core facilities support interdisciplinary and guest research by providing communal space, tools, and equipment. University facilities are able to apply for funds to cover costs associated with research facilities, like replacing and maintaining equipment. Core Facilities
