  2. Not all Native teens are having sex. Abstinent teens have reasons for not having sex. Effective programs to delay sexual intercourse must know and understand the reasons youth give for not having sex. Limited data about Native youth specific to decision-making in relation to sexual activity, birth control and pregnancy. Background

  3. What is N*TV? Native Teen Voices (N*TV) is: • A partnership between the Twin Cities Native community and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health • Analysis of existing survey data • Native-led data collection - focus groups and surveys • Native guided - data analysis and interpretation • Dissemination of useful information to both Native and public health communities.

  4. Phase One: • Examine survey data for information about teen decision-making about sexual activity. • Ever had sexual intercourse for 13-15 & 16-18 year olds. • Reasons for not having sex for 13-15 & 16-18 year olds. • Use of birth control among sexually experienced teens. • Ever been involved in a pregnancy for 16-18 year olds. Phase Two: • Through focus groups, ask Native youth their opinions about teen pregnancy and parenting. • A survey will allow them to voice their personal attitudes on teen pregnancy, sexual behavior, teen assets, and connection to culture.

  5. Surveys for Phase One Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) 1998 and 2001 4135 American Indian youth (13-18 years) in our statewide school-based survey sample.

  6. How many Native teens are not having sex? • 2056 of the 4135 Native teens in this survey have not had sexual intercourse. • Sexual experience increases with age.

  7. Conclusions • Sexual experience is more common among 16-18 year-olds. • Many 13-15 year-olds agree “sex is not right for a person my age.” • Fear of STI or pregnancy is a big reason for the delay of sexual intercourse • Females are more likely to report “I don’t want to have sex” as a reason.

  8. Next steps We can do better! We know more about risk factors than we do about assets of Native youth • limited by the questions in existing surveys Phase Two (N*TV): Focus groups and surveys with ~200 MN Native teens to gain a better understanding of decision-making about teen pregnancy and parenting. Expected completion: Aug 2005
