  3. INDIA • Population in 1947 was 350 Million • Population is 1.21 billiontoday • 1.39 billion expected by 2025

  4. INDIA • That’s 180,000,000 more mouths to feed in 13 years

  5. INDIA • The British arrived in 1609 and left in 1947 • The East India Trading Company worked for the Kings and Queens of the United Kingdom • Took over parts of India until the whole country was part of the United Kingdom

  6. British INDIA • Include today’s: • INDIA • PAKISTAN • SRI LANKA • BANGLADESH • BURMA

  7. Jammu and Kashmir • When the British left they gave Jammu and Kashmir to Hindu India and NOT Muslim Pakistan • Jammu and Kashmir’s leaders were Hindus • Most people in Jammu and Kashmir are Muslim

  8. Pakistan’s Role • Pakistan was created for Muslims and Kashmir is mostly Muslim • Pakistan believes it should have control over Kashmir • Pakistani Terrorist groups and Al Qaeda terrorize the region of Kashmir

  9. Pakistan and India have been fighting over Kashmir since 1947 • Parts of Kashmir are controlled by China too

  10. Why does this matter? • China, India, and Pakistan all have nuclear weapons

  11. H I M A L A Y A S • Mountains between China Nepal, and India • Mt. Everest at 29,035 feet • is the highest point on earth

  12. Too Many People • Overpopulation leads to degradation of land and resources, pollution, and poor living conditions • China and India face serious problems associated with overpopulation in the future

  13. CHINA • A leading civilization in ancient and medieval times • China fell into decline in the 19th and 20th centuries • Many of its main ports were taken over by the British, Portuguese and Germans

  14. C H I N A • The Japanese invasion in World War II and a corrupt, inefficient government resulted in the Chinese Revolution in 1949 • This removed the Republic of China and replaced it with the People’s Republic of China • Which is not a republic

  15. China is the world’s largest communist country… • And the most populous • 1,343,239,923 people live in China today

  16. China’s one child policy • Parents must pick up a birth certificate for their child before it is born • Families with one child receive benefits

  17. China’s one child policy • If the family has more than one child it is punishable by a tax of up to half the family’s income • Unplanned or unauthorized pregnancies must be terminated • China’s population is now growing at .57%

  18. China’s one child policy • Having twins is exempt from the one child policy • Some minorities are sometimes allowed to have two • People living in rural areas can have more than one child because more people are needed to work on the land

  19. Mongolia • The Mongol Empire was founded by Genghis Khan in 1206 • Mongolia is the world’s least densely populated country • Approximately 30% of the population are nomadic or semi-nomadic

Indonesia • Indonesia is an archipelago made of approximately (about) 17,508 islands • Indonesia is rich in Natural Gas and Oil • Indonesia is a member of OPEC • Was a Dutch colony during age of imperialism • Royal Dutch Shell oil company began in the colony • Captured by the Japanese early in WWII for their oil resources

  22. Indonesia • Is a part of the Ring of Fire • Is the largest Muslim country • Arabic traders brought Islam to Indonesia over 1,000 years ago

  23. JAPAN • Is also a part of the Ring of Fire • Japan was never colonized by the west • Trade was prohibited with western countries until the 1850’s • Japan modernized and industrialized very fast

  24. JAPAN’S EMPIRE • Japan quickly took control of Korea, Manchuria (in China), Taiwan, and took control of parts of Russia • Japan’s goal was to become the dominant power in East Asia • Push out Europeans and Americans

  25. JAPAN’S EMPIRE • Japan’s empire continued to grow until the Americans, Russians and British defeated Japan in 1945

  26. Singapore • City-State • The city is the whole country • Very strict laws in Singapore
