  5. Objective The webinar will help admissions and financial aid professionals engage in meaningful discussions with institutional leadership to create greater access for all students. Webinar participants are from colleges and universities, secondary schools, non-profit organizations, and policy organizations. We will do our best to use universal principles while citing examples from college level enrollment practice. Participants are urged to contribute with questions and comments.

Influencing Our Leaders:Our Starting Points • Educate ourselves and our staffs about the conditions in which we work • Devise methods and incorporate practices to address them • Adopt educational values in our language, training, and practices • Place the well being of students at the pinnacle of our efforts.

Influencing Our Leaders: Knowledge is Key • Know the educational imperatives for the nation • Know the nature of the emerging environment for all institutions • Know your particular educational landscape intimately • Know and promulgate the principles of good practice for our profession • Know and practice the ways in which the admission, aid, and school transition processes contribute to student self-knowledge, independence, and informed decision-making

Influencing Our Leaders: Down to Business • Understand how their agenda is set (know what matters to them and to others like them) • Find legitimate and persuasive ways to be on the agenda • Teach them through our presentations, through our publications, and through the values we exhibit in our programs • Use the power of stories and examples • Involve them in our programs and professional activities • Frame our messages wisely; know when political, economic, or social frames work best • Remind leaders of their own strongly held educational values

Influencing Our Leaders: We Do Not Stand Alone • Draw on the vast body of research to make our points - be evidence based • Use visible authorities, experts, or thought leaders within the field • Draw on our professional associations • Draw on our colleagues - we have varied and abundant talent among us 

  16. Influencing Our Leaders: Be In It For The Long Haul • Change comes in both small increments and big waves • Celebrate your wins • Reframe and be persistent with your losses • Choose your battles wisely • Know that your timing matters • Live to fight again
