Corinth Section 18 Acts 18
City of Corinth • Destroyed by Romans 146 B.C. • Rebuilt 44B.C. Julius Caesar • Great wealthy commercial city • Mixed population, Romans, Greek, Oriental…. • It had 2 harbors • Isthmus (facilitated east - west transportation) • Great outdoor theater (20000) • Temple of Aphrodite (1000 prostitutes) • “korinthiazomai” means to practice fornication • Supported every kind of religion and evil
“no man shall set on thee to hurt thee” “…Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.” (Act 18:9,10) • like us Paul at times had difficulties with his problems • he experienced much persecution and sickness • we can read how down he felt in 1Co 2:1-4 • by relying on God’s assistance, Paul was able not only to cope, but to succeed
“Henceforth I will go to the Gentiles” • Aquila and Priscilla had been expelled from Rome vs.2 • Claudius had done this because of Jewish disturbances vs.2 • Paul, whose occupation was also tent making, worked with Aquila and lived at their home in Corinth vs.3 • but on the sabbath Paul reasoned in the synagogue vs.4 • when Silas and Timothy came, Paul testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ (anointed) vs.5 • this teaching they blasphemed and rejected, so Paul said: “Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go to the Gentiles.” (Act 18:6)
“I have much people in the city” • In fact Paul began teaching at the house of Justus which was next door to the synagogue vs.7 • “And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized” (Act 18:8) • Paul was pleased with this success. • In his first letter to the Corinthians we read that Crispus was one of the few people that Paul personally baptized • afterward the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision vs.9
“brought him to the judgment seat” • ”And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul and brought him to the judgment seat, saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.” (Act 18:12,13) • the Jews used the arrival of a new governor as an occasion to resume their attack on Paul • Gallio immediately comes to Paul’s defense vs.14 • “I will be no judge of such matters” vs.15 • “And he drave them from the judgment seat.” vs.16
“I will be no judge of such matters” • ”...If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you: but if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters. And he drave them from the judgment seat.” (Act 18:14,15) • the Greeks took this opportunity to turn the tables • they took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue • beat him while Gallio looked on vs.17 • so Paul remained in Corinth a good while after this vs.18
“I will return again to you if God will” ”…then (Paul) took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria…” (Act 18:18) • accompanies Priscilla and Aquila to Ephesus vs.18 • briefly reasons with the Jews in the synagogue there vs.19 • they try and persuade him to stay on vs.20 • but Paul desires to keep the feast at Jerusalem • promises to return if God wills it vs.21 • stops to visit the ecclesias (brethren) at various places vs.22,23 • the Second missionary journey is complete vs.23
“mighty in the scriptures” ”And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught dilligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.” (Act 18:24,25) • Priscilla and Aquila hear Apollos in the synagogue • expound unto him the way of God more perfectly vs.26 • Apollos continues to preach in Achaia vs.27 • mightily convincing the Jews that Jesus was Christ vs.28
“Lessons for Us” • Even a mighty and dedicated disciple could through circumstances be driven to a very low point in spirit • In Paul’s despondency, Jesus, himself sustained him and encouraged him through the assurance of his care • The scriptures encourage us to do as Paul did • “Cast thy burden on the LORD and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved” (Psa 55:22) • “ Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt.11:28-30)
