  2. WHAT IS MECHANICAL TRACTION? Mechanical Traction is a type of decompression therapy performed in a clinical setting under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. This type of therapy utilizes a variety of spinal unloading, decompression and mechanical devices to reduce symptoms associated with conditions causing spinal compression and/or Hypomobility.   3. WHAT CONDITIONS ARE TREATED BY MECHANICAL TRACTION? • Conditions that involve compression of the spine can have painful and debilitating effects on those affected. When the vertebra of the spine become compressed due to degenerative condition or disease, the soft tissue that forms the spine can become malformed, strained and/or torn. During a typical appointment a patient will lay on a specialized inversion table. This table looks similar to a massage table and is equipped with an array of spinal decompression tools and mechanisms to the spine. A physical therapist will then fit attachments such as ropes, slings, and pulleys to the patient as part of an individualized treatment program to mechanically relieve pressure.
