  2. Workshop Objectives Learn what AGORA offers, main features, and appropriate use Learn how to open AGORA, log in and navigate to find journals and download articles. Learn how to use CAB Abstracts and publishers’ websites to find citations and download articles.

AGORA is Evolving • Changes to the website may occur. • Technical difficulties occasionally arise. • If your password doesn’t work the first time, don’t attempt to log in more than 3 times in a row. • Any ongoing trouble with AGORA, e-mail agora@fao.org (describe problem and include print screen).

  4. How to Use AGORA

  5. Step 1 Start your web browser(Internet Explorer or Netscape). Step 2 Type: http://www.aginternetwork.orgin the “Address” box Step 3 Press “Enter” on the keyboard or GO Opening AGORA Homepage

  6. Information about AGORA is provided in different languages: Arabic, English, French or Spanish Information About AGORA, including Eligibility To register click here Help and Contact Us Features

  7. To login to AGORA Click here To browse journals click on journals

  8. Logging In • Anyone can browse journals without logging in • To access full-text journal articles users’ institutions must be registered and user must log in using institutional user name and password • AGORA log in does not give access to personalized services on publishers’ websites

  9. Type in User ID and Password exactly as provided by your institution. Click Sign On.

  10. Ensure that you have Java on the machine that you are using or a pop up message will ask you to download

  11. User Authentication Page Click on AGORA Journal Search. DO NOT close this window until you want to log out.

  12. Main Navigation Bar Remains Available for Use Logout Button Different Features to Find Journals

Getting Around AGORA • Find and retrieve full-text for a specific article citation • Find journals (AGORA) or specific articles (CAB Abstracts) on a particular topic • Use Publisher, Title, Subject and CAB to search for journal and directly link to publisher’s page • Browse important titles on a regular basis • Find out what journals you can access • Get access to other resources and bibliographic databases

  14. Journals titles are organized Alphabetically by Title; by Publisher; and by Subject

  15. Titles Organized Alphabetically Click on the “M”

  16. 2. Click on Back or Journals to return to Journals page 1. Page opens with all the Journal titles beginning with the letter “M”

  17. Choose the journal you want to search

  18. The journal will open in a new window of the Publisher’s Journal level page

  19. Titles by Publisher Click on arrow to view list of publishers.

  20. Click on desired publisher.

  21. 2. Select a different publisher 1. Retrieves list of all journals published by Blackwell Publishing in AGORA.

  22. The complete list of Blackwell journals in alphabetical order Choose the journal you want to search

  23. The journal will open in a new window of the Publisher’s Journal level page

  24. Titles by Subject Pick the subject area you are interested in, e.g. Fisheries/Aquatic Science

  25. Choose a new subject by clicking on the arrow. The list of journals in the subject area picked

  26. Remember you can also browse by title, subject or publisher using the navigation bar.

Step 1: Go to Journals Page Step 2a: Find the journal. Since we know the title, we can browse to find it.

  29. Step 2b: Find the journal and click on the title to open the journal homepage in a new window

  30. You are now in the CSIRO Publisher Journal page

  31. To view the full list of issues available click on these options

  32. This gives you a list of the issues available Choose the issue you are looking for by Clicking on the link/ on it.

  33. Scroll down to view the full list of articles.

  34. Click with your mouse pointer on the full-text link to view the article in plain HTML text.

  35. To view article in PDF format click on the link Article downloads in plain text- this is faster where IC is slow

  37. Ensure that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your machine Article in PDF format

Summary • AGORA permits you to browse journals, publishers, find a known citation, download articles. • You can also find journals and articles using CAB Abstracts- (see CAB Abstracts Module) • For navigation and use of Publisher websites- (see Publisher Websites Module) • Once you find the correct journal, volume and issue, find the pdf and save it or print it for use a • Exercise: Find the following citation and retrieve the full-text article • H. C. C. Meertens, L. J. Ndege and P. M. Lupeja. (1999) “The cultivation of rainfed, lowland rice in Sukumaland, Tanzania .” Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment. 76 (1): 31-45.
