  2. MARSHAL JOSIP BROZ TITO, YUGOSLAVIA’S DICTATOR UNTIL 1980 • After his death, the centrally planned economy, became an issue • SLOVENIA AND CROATIA were more prosperous and voted for independence in 1990 • SERBS had more control of the central government

  3. CAUSES OF CONFLICT: • Serbian geopolitics • Lack of multicultural education from Tito • Myths about benefits of ethnically pure nation-states • Lack of humanitarian leadership

  4. Road To Independence • Slovenia became independent in June, 1991. • Croats were bombed in Dec., 1991. More struggle to become free. • Bosnia had the most conflict

  5. KOSOVO • Territory dominated by Ethnic Albanians • KLA formed to fight against Slobodan Milosevic

  6. CONSEQUENCES OF WAR • MAJOR damage to infrastructure • Danube River blocked with debris • Milosevic removed from power in 2000 • 2002 brought to trial • Died in prison in 2006, but trial not concluded when he died.
