FU Mei’s story at Graphene AI is like watching a scrappy startup blossom into a data powerhouse. Itall startedin 2014with a spark–aguestlecture. Priorinterestin dataanalytics ignitedFUMei’s passion forthethen-boomingfield ofAIandanalytics.Fastforwardto the next year, andfueledby herloveforallthings startup(thinkclose-knitteams and endless learning!), shelandedan internshipatGrapheneworkingin theAIand analytics domain. Backthen, thecompany was practically a handful ofpeople! While her internship duties leaned more towards IT than data analytics (data wranglinginstead ofdatawizardry!),FUMei neverlost sight of hergoal.Theteam, though small, was atightbunch, and sheeven crossedpaths with Praveen, another https://grapheneai.com/fu-mei-from-ai-and-analytics-intern-to-lead-analyst/ 1/6

FU Mei and her confusion at a crossroad Graduation rolledaround, andFUMeifound herselfatacrossroads.WhileGraphene AIwas apromisingcompany, her heart yearnedfortheworld ofvideo games.Let’s just say,GrapheneAIwasn’tquiteready to let his talentedintern walkaway. She openly expressed herdesireto join avideo gamecompany, leavingthem determinedto keep her on board.Luckily,FUMeicontinuedto visitGraphene, keeping in touch with the“oldfolks”(as shefondly calls them). During one such visit, One of the senior members saw his chance and asked her “What happened with the gaming company?” Turns out, the gaming company’s passion for FU Mei’s talent didn’t extend to paying her. He,recognizingFUMei’s value, saw his window. He offered heraposition butwith atwist:a salary thatreflected herworth (even ifit stretchedthebudgetabit).FUMei, everthe negotiator, counteredwith a number.A numberthatmade him sweat, buta number they simply couldn’t refuse. Seizingthemoment,Hedeliveredthe ultimatecloser:“Deal. But only if you sign the contractright now.”WhileFUMeichattedwith theteam, acontractmaterialized, seemingly out ofthin air. Before shecould have secondthoughts, pen metpaper, officially makingFUMeiaGrapheneAIteammate.Who knewthis decision would mark the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership? FU Mei’s journey at Graphene wasn’t without its bumps. The biggest challenge? Time. Startups often mean long hours and weekend sprints, especially when deadlines loomed(thinkclients breathingdown your neck!).Dataaccuracy in AIandanalytics is their holy grail,FUMei spentcountless hours meticulously combingthrough information, relying heavily on manualchecks.Talkaboutputtingthe“eye”in data analysis! We wouldn’t be doing FU Mei justice if we didn’t mention her role in developing the automation scripts thatrevolutionized ourworkflowin theAIandanalytics space. It’s a testament to her dedication that she tackled tasks outside her initial purview. Challenges breedinnovation.Theimplementation ofautomatedchecks becamea game-changer,freeing upFUMei’s timeandensuringwatertightdata. Lookingback,FUMeiemphasizes thepowertrio ofpassion, perseverance, andgritin AIandanalytics.Sheexpresses herdeepgratitudeforthe“oldfolks”who’vebeen the backbone ofGrapheneAI sinceday one,and herexcitementforthe“newbatch of whiz kids” who will propel the company even further. https://grapheneai.com/fu-mei-from-ai-and-analytics-intern-to-lead-analyst/ 2/6

Addingadash of humor,FUMeirecalls a hilarious incidentfrom herinternshipdays. Herloveforlearning newthings extendedto officevocabulary, perhaps alittletoo enthusiastically. Picking upa newHindiwordfromacolleague(let’s just say itwasn’t exactly “hello”),FUMeidecidedto testit out on one of ourIndian seniorcolleagues. Thelook on his face, when ittumbled out of hermouth, can only bedescribedas hilarious shock or one can say he was scandalized by her words. WhileFUMei,in herinnocence, thought she’dmastereda newgreeting, itturned out her pronunciation was more “colorful” than intended.
