EVOLUTION OF IOT :: IMPACT AND FUTURE OF IOT IOT TODAY IN COMPARISON TO IOT IN THE FURTURE From diskettes with only 75.7KB storage space to Cloud that has unlimited storage, technology has come a long way, all thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT). So, you may ask, what exactly is the Internet of things and how has it come such a long way? Before diving into the details of the Internet of Things, let’s understand IoT? The term Internet of things was coined by British technology pioneer Kevin Ashton is also known as Machine to machine learning. It is a system where both conventional and unconventional devices are connected wirelessly with the help unique identifiers (UIDs). IoT enables us to transfer data without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. Devices are now installed in vehicles to track the driver’s behaviour and in case of an accident, your safety is taken care of, as your family will be notified almost instantly. HEALTH Be it a simple BP machine or a CT scan, the medical industry has been benefitted majorly due to IoT. It is believed that a patient recovers faster when surrounded by loved ones. IoT has made it easy to monitor the health even while a patient is in the comfort of his home. Monitors now transmit the signal directly to the hospital making it easier to track in real-time and provide the necessary medication immediately. Swallow ‘smart pills’ to track and note the exact disorder. Smartwatches not only help you keep your health in check but also track the depressive symptoms of an individual by assessing their moods and sleep patterns. EDUCATION Need is the mother of all invention and today’s generation wants to learn and be aware of what’s happening around them. Thus, IoT is an essential tool that is helping the education sector transform rapidly. Gone are the days where a student would be forced to spend hours in the library researching

Understanding scientific phenomena have now become simple with the advent of technology and students are able to enhance their performance with interactive software, e-books and e-classes. Parents are now more involved as they can interact directly with the teachers and track the progress of their children. One of the best innovations of technology are the safety measures taken by the school to protect the students. The IDs in some schools have a chip installed to track the location of the child, this reduces the chances of kidnapping or a child missing. However, children will now have to beware as skipping school will now become a daunting task, for their teachers and parents have constantly got their eyes on them. ECONOMY AND FINANCE While IoT is helping several other sectors, the Economy and Finance field have benefitted the most. The significant growth in the information technology and communication sector itself has contributed greatly towards the economy. Smartphones have become a status symbol and people often prefer the best in the market. It is believed that by 2020, every individual will own 10 gadgets, this itself has added to the economy. Payments and transactions can be made with a swipe of a finger as cards and e- banking apps are installed in their devices. Technology has made it easier to track and preserve perishable goods, the conditions required for goods can now be maintained easily and necessary action can be taken immediately in case required. It has also become easier to quantify public information to measure the GDP. MANUFACTURING Data collection of clients and customer has become easy and thus it has helped improve the supply of products based on requirements. Internet protocol network has helped connect enterprise applications and devices. It is easier to track the performance of equipment and track security threats in real-time through notifications and alarms. Checking the efficiency and product quality which was difficult previously but IoT has made it easier to collect data to analyse and make better decisions based on quality and operational efficiency.

Here are a few to name: HOME In an article Forbes mentioned that google and other providers are moving beyond entertainment and air-conditioning. Technology is now focused on saving time, energy and money. Smart home apps will use sensors and based on data collected over time it will check your energy usage and manage it automatically. Maintenance of home appliances will also become easier as the sensors will detect the issue and inform you or maybe even call for assistance. Also, if your grocery is over, your fridge will make a record and directly place an order for the required items. So, don’t be surprised if a mechanic or a delivery man knocks at your door and says, “I was called by your app”. CUTTING WASTE According to the World Economic Forum one-third of food is wasted along the supply chain, every year. Farmers can now solve problems with the help of cameras, sensors and weather station. Apps are

  5. being developed to help farmers check the health of the leaf and know how much to irrigate. Farmers in Africa will soon be able to track market data to avoid waste. SMART CITY Cities are now being able to curb their energy and water consumption and smart water meters will aid them. A clean environment is a healthy environment – trash sensors will soon send the dumpsters a message when they need to be emptied. This will help reduce waste and avoid the infestation of rats. In case of traffic, drivers will soon be recommended an alternate route and if you are searching for a parking spot, you will be directed to the one nearest to you. What more?
