The research question is one in a series of questions you will ask to find the answer to your big question, which of course is… “I want to know everything about John Smith b. 1836 Tennessee or maybe New York who married Mary Jones!” Big questions overwhelm and confuse your research. One step at a time… Ask yourself: what do I want to know.

  10. Start your research with what you already know: • Write it down • Organize it • Analyze it • Start to develop a research plan for the question in front of you. What is next?

  11. If we start a block of research without defining our objective, then what will our research be based upon? The only option, then, is simply saying "Oh, here's a set of records I haven't used before, so I'll look up the names ABC and XYZ." But that, of course, would be just a "look up." Research calls for much more than just a name and a set of records. It also calls for strategies and context and correlation and analysis to get the most out of that set of records.
