  3. Bring Your Own Technology • 1:1 computing is no longer the goal • Financial limitations in districts • Student’s personal technology fills the gap What do our students really want from school?

  4. Bring Your Own Technology What is Bring Your Own Technology? • Students bring in their own device capable of using WiFi • Examples: Netbook, laptop, iPad, Smart Phone, Mac, tablet, Ipod Touch • Use WiFi to access the Internet • More than access to technology tools

  5. Role of LISD Technology • Provide high-speed wireless networks • Devote resources on the back end by continually improving the infrastructure • Provide devices for those students that can’t afford or don’t have one • Provide access to web-based resources iTunes, Live@EDU, Web 2.0 and More!

  6. Classroom Design • The teacher serves as the facilitator of the learning • Students collaborate and research using personal technology tools • Teachers are expected to monitor student use • Students are expected to use these tools appropriately !

Bring Your Own Technology Lewisville ISD Set Up • Separate guest WiFi network • Increased number of campus wireless access points to support more users • Network ID and password required for guest access • The Guest WiFi is isolated from the main network and guest machines cannot see each other  More secure and prevents spreading of viruses • Internet access only on the Guest WiFi • Internet access is still filtered to meet Federal guidelines • 3G/4G capable devices must use our WiFi

Bring Your Own Technology Spring 2011 Pilot • Nine volunteer teachers at HHS 9th • Provided a training session for teachers • Students interest was high • Many types of devices with probably ½ Smart Phones • Used as a supplement along with the classroom computers and foundational instructional software

  9. Bring Your Own Technology Projected availability at campuses: • High schools – first week of school • Middle schools – completed by January 2012 • Elementary schools – To begin in the spring • Exceptions due to campus rebuilds or eRate funding
