  1. The Chocolate War By Robert Cormier

  2. Event: Football • Jerry tries out for the football team. He struggles but does not give up.

  3. Event: The vigils • Archie and Obie sit on the bleachers and create assignments for new vigil members. Jerry’s assignment will be “the chocolates”.

  4. Event: Jerry’s Life • Jerry is harassed by a hippie. The man accuses jerry of blindly following the rules. Jerry starts to think the way his life is headed… • “Square Boy” • “Your Missing a lot of things in life boy – better not miss your bus!”

  5. Event: chocolate sale • Brother leon and archie meet to discuss the chocolate sale. Leon asks Archie to get the vigils to help with the sale. Leon hopes for its success so he can become headmaster.

  6. Event: the black box • At the first vigils meeting – Archie gives Goober his assignment. Carter holds the box and Archie picks a marble out of the box. If the marble is white Archie does not have to do the assignment. If the marble is black archie must complete the assignment. Archie picks a white marble.

  7. Event: Bailey vs. Leon • A student named Bailey is accused of cheating by brother leon. Leon accuses bailey of comparing himself to god. Leon turns the tables when he reveals that Bailey’s classmates have let him down by not standing up for him.

  8. Event: Goober’s Assignment • Goober had to unscrew all the screws in the furniture in Brother Eugene’s room. Other members of the vigils arrived and helped him complete the assignment.

  9. Jerry’s Dad • Learned that Jerry’s dad possibly wanted to become a doctor but instead became a pharmacist. This made Jerry realize that his dad’s life was depressing – jerry decided his own life would be different.

  10. Chocolate Sale • Brother Leon has an assembly to explain the chocolate sale. The boys are supposed to sell 50 boxes instead of 25 this year. The vigils are unhappy with their involvement with Brother leon and the chocolate sale. Archie thought this would show how much power the vigils had in the school.

  11. Room 19: • Brother Eugene’s room collapses as a result of Goober’s assignment and help from the vigils. Brother Leon finds archie and whispers menacingly at him for causing chaos before the chocolate sale begins. Archie is angry because leon embarrasses him and spoils his enjoyment of the prank.

  12. Victory! • Jerry and his fellow freshmen football players are practicing against varsity players. They are continually beaten until Jerry manages to get a pass off and scores a touchdown. Jerry is ecstatic about this success. When he returns to the locker room he finds a summons from the vigils…

  13. “no” (emotions) • Goober feels guilty about the destruction of room 19. Brother leon is calling on all the boys and asking if they will accept the chocolates. Brother leon becomes angry when Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates.

  14. Chocolate Sales Begin • Tubs was selling chocolates and using the money to buy his girlfriend a bracelet. Every morning during homeroom leon calls the boy’s last names to find out how many boxes of chocolates they sold. Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates. Brian Cochran (treasurer of chocolate sale) realizes Leon has exaggerated the chocolate sales…

  15. Blackmail 1: • Emile asks archieabout the embarrassing picture that archie supposedly has of emile. We learn in this chapter that this picture does not actually exist- but archie feels the need to keep up this pretense to keep emile handy if he needs him. Archie is uncomfortable with emile even though – he (archie) is a lot like Emile

  16. Blackmail 2: • Brother leon and davidcaroni: Caroni gets an “F” and has never received one before. Brother Leon hints that he will change caroni’s grade if Caroni finds out why Jerry isn’t selling chocolates.

  17. Jerry’s refusal • Jerry “disturbs” the universe by refusing to sell the chocolates. Jerry causes problems in Brother Leon’s world.

  18. Jerry’s confusion • Tries to figure why he did what he did; he wrestles with his actions. • Struggles to understand why he refused to sell the chocolates

  19. Ch. 19: Results • Fellow classmates admire Jerry’s refusal to sell the chocolates. Many of them wonder if they should follow his behavior.

  20. Ch. 20: Cruel Trick • Archie anonymously tipped off Brother Eugene as to the cue word (“environment”) so that the teacher continued to make the boys dance and ruin the prank.

  21. Ch. 21: Reactions… • Archie decides that Jerry needs to follow the assignment. So he decides to call Jerry to another meeting…

  22. Ch. 22: Chocolate Flop • The boys are not selling chocolates. Brother leon pretends he is not disappointed with the sales.

  23. Ch. 23: Rebels • Goober announces that he is quitting the football team because he didn’t want to support the vigils or trinity anymore. He tries to convince jerry to sell the chocolates. Jerry refuses.

  24. Ch. 24: The Phone call • Brother leon calls archie. He tells archie the vigils must support the chocolate sale or leon will abolish the vigils.

  25. Ch. 25: “Asking” • The vigils held a meeting. Archie “asks” Jerry to sell the chocolates. Obie feels that jerry is going to refuse and this will lead to Archie’s downfall.

  26. Ch. 26: that girl with the face • Jerry got the courage to call Ellen on the phone. Ellen does not know who he is and he ends up hanging up. Jerry is happy that he pushed himself to do this and changed up the routine of his everyday life. (“Square Boy”; disturbing the universe).

  27. Ch. 27: THE THREAT • Frankie rollo gives the vigils attitude and carter beats him up. Archie is told that if he does not succeed in getting the vigil’s reputation back to where it was he will be kicked off the vigils. He is put on probation.

  28. Ch. 28 The tide has turned… • Jerry receives prank phone calls where someone is laughing at the other end. The message on jerry’s poster “Do I Dare disturb the universe” has been covered with paint and his gym shoes were destroyed. Finally, Jerry’s assignment for art has disappeared.

  29. Ch. 29: The flood of chocolate sales… • The chocolate sale has improved dramatically. The vigils are forcing kids to sell the chocolates and the sales are being distributed so that each kid reaches his 50 box quota. Brother leon is ecstatic!

  30. Ch. 30: Goober The Follower • Brother leon calls roll call for the chocolates. Jerry still says no, a student asks why he is refusing. Jerry says “I am jerry and I’m not going to sell the chocolates”. The other students annoyed with jerry’s behavior. Goober’s attempt to support jerry by not selling chocolates is thwarted. Goober is too chicken to stand up to the boys of the school and say he did not sell the chocolates.

  31. Ch. 31: fairy fightin!!!!!! • Emile accuses Jerry of being gay. Jerry is beaten up by Emile and 9 other kids. Jerry’s teammates purposely make him look bad at practice.

  32. Ch. 32: Jerrryyy…. Come outside • Jerry is physically and mentally exhausted and abused. He has deal with prank phone calls and taunting outside of his house. The bullying is now affecting his father as well. Jerry is not giving up and continues to answer the phone to show he is strong

  33. Ch. 33: Archie’s Annoyance • Archie yells at Emile for beating up Jerry with a large group. Emile admires Archie’s cruelty such as his idea to call jerry “queer”. Emile asks Archie about the picture but Archie says the picture never exists. At the end of the chapter Emile realizes he admires but hates Archie at the same time.

  34. Ch. 34:the loner#jerry • Jerry feels alone in the school. The chocolate sale finished with exactly 50 unsold boxes. Archie organizes a “raffle” for Jerry to get rid of his unsold chocolates

  35. Ch. 35: supreme lord emporercommander#archie#coolguy#swag • Archie convinces Jerry to get revenge on Emile by joining the raffle. Emile agrees to the raffle so that he can show that he can beat jerry up on his own. Cochran sells slips of paper and marvels at archie’s ability to con people. Archie feels he is the best con-artist around.

  36. Ch. 36: Archie’s Triumph • Archie set up the boxing match between jerry and emile. Raffle tickets are sold and include the person, the move, and the person’s name. Archie had to pick two marbles out of the black box. He picked two white marbles and therefore did not have to take part in the fight.

  37. CH. 37: Jerry’s Defeat • The boys begin the fight by reading the raffle tickets but then Janza loses it when jerry blocks a dirty hit and beats Jerry until he collapses. Jerry gets one more hit in but realizes that he has become an animal and is no longer disturbing the universe. Brother Jacques ends the fight and confronts Archie.

  38. Ch. 38 & 39: Jerry’s Advice • Jerry advises goober to not disturb the universe because the results are that they “murder” you. Brother Jacques is reprimanding Archie and Brother leon comes to his rescue. Archie feels invincible and could care less about what happened to jerry.
