  2. Look at this word and listen to me read it out loud. As I read, listen to find the common word part over, the root word and the ending. overlooking Did you say that the root word was look and the ending was ing? Now blend all of those parts back together to read the whole word.

  3. The word parts over-, sub-, and under- appear at the beginning of many longer words. Being able to recognize word parts can help us to read many words that look unfamiliar at first.

  4. Look at the words below. With your partner, identify the beginning familiar word part in each word. Then break the rest of the word into parts and read the word over- whelm ing marine sub under develop ed

  5. With your partner, look in your science or social studies book and identify words with over-,under-, and sub-. List the words you find and sort them by beginning word part. Exchange lists with another pair of partners and take turns reading the words on the list.
