The Joys of Parenting Teenagers Fall 2009 September 29: Taming the Tiger: Anger Management We all get angry at times, but how we manage our anger will determine if it is destructive or productive. This seminar will focus on ways to manage our own anger as well as how to guide our children in managing theirs. Co-led by Lou & Gina October 6: Talking to Your Kids About Sex, STD’s and Teen Parenting As a parent, you have a critical impact on your child and how they navigate the difficult years of being a teen.Talking to Teens so they know your thoughts on sex, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases can be a great form of prevention. Do you need some ideas how to start the conversation?  This seminar will give you tips on communicating effectively with your teen about the tough topics of sex, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Led by Elizabeth. At the end there will be a question and answer session about talking to kids and how the school can support you. Co-led by Elizabeth & Gina. October 20: Where Do I Begin? Study and Organization Techniques This seminar will give you resources, ideas and practical techniques for students to use in order to stay organized and to prepare for exams and large projects. The Cornell notetaking system will be shown. Co-led by Sandy & Gina Students may attend the Study and Organization Techniques program with an adult. November 3: Noche de Educación para padres de habla hispana: Introducción al sistema educativo Americano (del High School a la Universidad) Esta sesión está orientada para los padres que tienen hijos en noveno grado (freshman year) en High School. Los padres de otros grados también están invitados si lo desean.Explicaremos los términos básicos que los padres Deben conocer para facilitar el éxito de sus hijos durante los cuatro años deEducación Secundaria. Ofreceremos cuidado de niños pequeños durante la sesión. Co-led by Javier & Marty "Por favor, traigan a sus estudiantes de noveno  grado con ustedes“ November 17: Who's in Charge here? Raising Responsible TeenagersSince we cannot go everywhere with our children, we try to develop our children's ability to make good choices. This seminar will discuss ideas for setting rules and consequences that promote good choice making. In addition we will discuss ways to recognize manipulation, how to deal with it in our children and those rare occasions where it might be a helpful parenting tool. Co-led by: Tony & Gina The facilitator team consists of: Marty Beirne,WVHS Guidance Counselor; Dr. Gina Bogin, LCSW,WVHS Social Worker; Dr. Sandy Krickeberg, Challenge Lab Coordinator; Lou Mahalik, LCSW WVHS Social Worker; Javier Polavieja, WVHS Guidance Counselor; Tony Pelletier, LCSW, WVHS Social Worker; Elizabeth Phelps, Prevention Program Supervisor, TeenParent Connection All seminars are held at WVHS from 7 pm – 9 pm in Room 103.
