  1. ENV 305 COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

  2. Subject Overview Community-Based Approaches have been termed the “new tools for environmental protection” by the National Academy of Science in the USA. • The emphasis in the course is on creating a setting where island communities have complete ownership of the initiatives. This is based upon a four-step process of: • Conducting a Rapid Assessment of Perceptions (RAP) at the island/community level, • Working with local people to develop pilot community development and education strategies, • Collaborative Project Implementation, • Monitoring and evaluation.

  3. Community Development is like Swimming You learn CD by practicing…….Theory alone is not enough!

  4. Learning objectives for this lesson By the end of the lesson students should be able to: • Define a community. • Explain three types of communities that exists in the world today. • Distinguish between healthy communities and unhealthy communities. • Define Community Development. • Discuss the main issues and concerns that exist in the Maldivian communities today.

  5. What is a your definition ? • A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. • The condition of sharing or having certain attitudes and interests in common. • A community lets people who share a common interest interact with one another.

  6. Types of communities Geographic Communitiesshare physical space, so that residents come into contact with each other by virtue of proximity, rather than intent. However, to be a "real community”, residents must feel a sense of belonging and hold at least some values and symbols in common.

  7. Types of communities Communities of Interest are sometimes referred to as "communities within communities". Members of these communities choose to associate with each on the basis of a common interest or shared concerns.

  8. Types of communities Virtual Communitiesare groups of people that primarily interact via communication media rather than face to face. If the mechanism is a computer network, it is called an online community. Online Communities are "social aggregations” that emerge from the Net when people carry on those public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling, to form webs of personal relationships".

  9. An individual can belong to several different communities at the same time; e.g. a faith community, a business community and a neighborhood community.

  10. Unhealthy Communities In an unhealthy community there may be an environmental disaster, such as the contamination of the water supply, a high level of poverty due to a major industry closing, or entrenched conflict over a divisive community issue.

  11. Healthy Communities. The path to becoming a healthy community starts with: • Broad community engagement, • Leadership, • Development of a shared vision and community goals, • Effective planning, and • Local government commitment and collaborative use of internal and external resources.

  12. What is Community Development? • There are many definitions of community development but the basic concept was stated by the United Nations in 1948 • "Community Development is a process designed to create conditions of economic and social progress for the whole community with its active participation and fullest possible reliance upon the community's initiative."

  13. So… How do you describe a Maldivian Community ?

  14. IS THIS OUR COMMUNITY?

  15. Discuss • What type of community is our community? • What are the main challenges we face as a community? • What are the main concerns in our community?

  16. To combat the challenges…… Community Development is based on connecting, consulting and collaborating with all community members in order to build and strengthen communities.

  17. Exercise one • Discuss among your group members, regarding different issues of concerns in our local communities. ( 10 min) • List out the concerns from minor to more serious concerns. ( 5min) • From the issues listed out, identify one issue your group wants to focus on. ( 10 min) • Now identify all the relevant stakeholders who are affected by this issue. ( 10 min) • From the stakeholders, identify a community you want to work to solve the issue. (5min) • Present the community and the issue you have chosen (5 min)
