  1. Bought a New Wi-Fi Router? Make Sure to Change These Settings There’s literally no life without Internet. Wherever we go, whatever we do; we rely highly on the Internet to stay connected, learn new things, and do many more things that you can imagine. If you are getting a Wi-Fi connection at home, router is something that you would have to install. It is a main component and a link between the data received from the ISP and transmitting it to devices connected to network. Router holds more importance than most of the homeowners actually think. Therefore, it is important that you make some changes to the settings immediately after setting up the router and installing Internet connection at home. Guest Network It is always advised to keep your wi-fi password a secret because home network contains confidential information. If you have guests coming over every now and then, it makes sense to set up a separate network for them due to security reasons. As soon you install a router, create a guest network. This will restrict the guests from accessing any data you would have shared on the network. Change Password There’s a default username and password for your router. Do not keep them as it is because if hacker knows your router’s make and model, it gets easier for them to crack the password. Go to settings in your router and change the network name as well as password. Network Mode and Bands Modern day routers have two frequencies - 2.5GHz and 5GHz. While 2.5GHz has a long reach, the same frequency is used by Bluetooth, microwave and other electronic devices at home. This could lead to a lot of congestion in the network and lower the speed. You can select 5GHz frequency for the router, and there will be less congestion. However, remember that this frequency doesn’t work on long range. Parental Control Look out for best family router because it will come with parental control such as Internet timeout and restricted access. The parental control features are a must in a house with kids to keep a check on the content that kids are watching and reduce their screen time. The Bottom Line If you are not a tech savvy person, making changes in settings might look a little overwhelming initially. However, manufacturers provide details manuals on how to set up the router and do small tweaks to make yours the best secure router.
