  2. Child Psychology • Just one of many branches of psychology. • Studies mental, emotional and social development. • Because of the many diagnosis, there are many different ways of treating.

The 3 contexts • The Social Context • Families, schools and peer groups all make up an important part. • The Cultural Context • Set of values, customs, shared assumptions and ways of living that influence development. • The Socioeconomic Context • Education people have, what their income is, their profession, and where they live.

  4. Gene Haas, MA, LPA • Started off as a foster parent and group home staff trainer. • Needed to work with parents to help the child. • Children need routine.

  5. Private vs. Group Practice • Advantages of having a private practice. • Can treat patients the way he thinks is best. • What type of clients to be seen. • Marriage counseling • Family counseling • Individual therapy for adult and children. • Play therapy.

  6. EMDR Therapy • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. • Most effective for PTSD and any type of anxiety disorder. • Works best is patient can be aware of any emotional or physical reactions when recalling an incident. • Medication can sometimes be eliminated.

  7. Education Needed • Level I licensed for EMDR • Level II licensed for EMDR • Licensed mental health professional • Additional workshops, seminars, and supervision options available.

  8. Some Concerns • What to do if someone is in danger of hurting themselves or others? • The warning signs to look for. • What to do if a patient has a breakdown during an office visit? • Listen • Self-sooth • Call “911”

  9. “Labels” placed on children today • What are the effects of “Labels” on children. • Adults and other children develop false expectations. • Do not treat the child as an individual. • Can prevent correct diagnosis. • Should help but shouldn’t limit the perception or potential of an individual.

  10. Length of Treatment • Amount of time varies with the situation. • Marriage counseling • 8-12 sessions • Individual adults • 10-15 sessions, with some needing on-going. • Children and Teens • 3-6 months of therapy, often returning for booster sessions.

  11. Cost of Sessions • How to determine the cost without insurance coverage. • Referring to agencies with sliding scale fees. • Supporting the local churches. • A benefit of having a private practice.

  12. The Emotional Aspect Of Being APsychologist • Being a psychologist involves listening and helping. • How you may feel after a long day of listening to upsetting stories. • The joy of seeing children, teens, adult, and families heal.

  13. Problems With The Mental Health Department • Insurances • Private • Medicaid • Hospitals were forced to close. • United State Justice Department has opened a formal investigation against DHHS. • Overcrowding has proven to be dangerous and deadly.

  14. Conclusion By looking into North Carolinas mental health crisis, hopefully we will be on the road to recovery soon!
