What is Palliative Care Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual (WHO 2003)

  3. Palliative care • Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process • Neither hastens or postpones death • Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms • Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of care

  4. Palliative Care • Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death • Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patient’s illness and their own bereavement

  5. Reasons to refer to Palliative Care • Patient experiencing or has the potential to experience uncontrolled symptoms related to their disease e.g Pain, nausea etc. • Patient needing Palliative care support within the community • Patient needing In Patient Palliative Care

  6. Where Palliative Care is given • In the patients own home, with support from community Palliative care, eg: Mercy Palliative Care, Melbourne City Mission • Hospice, or In patient Palliative care unit eg: Sunshine, Broadmeadows, Caratis Christi, Werribee • As an inpatient in hospital on an acute ward
