Dental Trauma • Dental trauma refers to an injury on hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and face. • This includes the teeth and surrounding tissues, the periodontium, tongue, lips and cheeks. • It is more prevalent with children between 8– 12 years of age but can still happen to anyone. • The prognosis of the tooth is worse the longer it is out of the mouth.

  5. Dental Anatomy • Primary • Eruption from 7-30 months • 20 teeth, 10 upper, 10 lower • 2X ( 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 molars) • Permanent • Begin formation 3-4 months • Eruption 7-21 years • 32 teeth ( including wisdom teeth) • 2x ( 4 incisors, 2 canines, 4 premolars, 6 molars)

  6. Final For Dental Troma • Pen or amoxicillin usually sufficient • Consider clindamycin or EES if allergic • Don’t forget tetanus immunization

  7. Dental Infection ? • A tooth infection is a complication of tooth decay. It may also occur when a tooth is broken or chipped. Openings in the tooth enamel allow bacteria to infect the center of the tooth (the pulp). Infection may spread from the root of the tooth to the bones supporting the tooth.

  11. Dental Restoration Examples • Fillings :are the most common type of dental restoration. Teeth can be filled with gold, silver amalgam, or tooth-colored plastic and glass materials called composite resin fillings. • Crowns : are a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size, strength, appearance, to hold a bridge in place or cover a dental implant. • Bridges : are false teeth that are designed to "bridge" the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Bridges can be anchored on either side by crowns and cemented permanently into place. • Implants : are replacement tooth roots. Implants are actually a small post made of metal that are placed into the bone socket where teeth are missing. • Dentures : are a removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are made of acrylic resin sometimes combined with metal attachments.
