The Big Idea: • Research conducted on Bluetooth may yield new uses in different fields. • Bluetooth is not limited to what has already been proven possible—a vast number of uses have yet to be discovered. • Our goal is to devise novel applications of Bluetooth to enhance and facilitate daily life. So, how does Bluetooth impact society today?

  3. Retail and Mobile e-Commerce • Bluetooth can be used to complete transactions without the use of debit/credit cards or cash. • A phone can emit a Bluetooth signal and consumers can pay for products using their phones. • This can be used at restaurants and movie theaters. • The consumer can pull up his/her bank account and send the money wirelessly and instantly to the business

Medical/Biological Sciences • UCLA developed a Bluetooth-based flow cytometry device • Measures the number of microscopic particles in a sample • Cost-effective and easy-to-use interface • Costs under $5 • Weighs less than 20 grams • Comprised of: • Simple lens • Color filter • Basic batteries • 2 LEDs

Travel • Airlines could eliminate the need for boarding passes or any sort or paper identification. • A customer could use the device to check in to their flight and show their boarding pass. • At hotels this could be used to check in a customer without their going to the front desk. • Bluetooth can also be used for traffic monitoring systems.

  6. Home Networking • Bluetooth can be used for connecting devices and sharing information or connectivity • Advantages: • Can be used without the need for Wi-Fi capability • Cheaper • Uses less power • Disadvantages: • Limits • Speed • Range

  7. Social Networking • BlueFriend (Technical University of Valencia, Spain) • Proposed social networking using Bluetooth • Ability to connect with each other to chat or exchange files in BlueFriend-enabled environment
