Synthesizing North American Continental Fluxes: Insights from Atmospheric Inversions and Forward Models

This interim synthesis study by Andy Jacobson, Mac Post, Debbie Huntzinger, Bob Cook, and other modelers explores the continental fluxes in North America using atmospheric inversions and forward models. The research analyses data from NEE site flux tower sites, including those in North American Boreal (NABR) and North American Temperate (NATM) regions. It provides a comparison of results between inversions and forward models, highlighting seasonality, uptake, and inter-annual variability. The study also delves into the relationship between GPP and NEP and presents conclusions on the differences and agreements observed in the study.

  1. NACP Interim Synthesis: Continental Fluxes from Forward and Inverse Models Andy Jacobson, Mac Post, Debbie Huntzinger, Bob Cook, and lots of modelers

  2. Atmospheric Inversions continent Forward Models Flux tower sites NEE site flux footprint size

  3. North America Boreal (NABR) North America Temperate (NATM)

  4. North America (boreal and temperate) summary stats for NEE

  5. Atmospheric Inversions MODIS Forward Models Flux tower sites NEE GPP

  6. No apparent relationship between GPP and NEP (in the same year, anyway)

  7. Conclusions Inversions do manifest more seasonality, uptake, and IAV over N. America than forward models. Inversions don't agree as well as one might hope. MODIS GPP generally smaller than forward simulations. MODIS, CASA models and DLEM see less GPP in 2002, but NEE signal is not apparent.
