“ONE HUNDRED TEKS BASED IDEASWITH ONE DECK OF CARDS”! BY: DEIDRE HANNIBLEDESOTO ISD
Introduction • Why me? • Why math?? • Why cards???
My Math Mission To provide students with a fun, yet rigorous and meaningful learning environment.
“The Top Five Things You Are Thinking This Morning”! 5. What class I am going to next… 4. I hope I can learn something easy to do with my students… 3. Well, let’s write this class down and leave… In 5,4,3,2,1 2. This Is the 1st Class of the Day, & I am Tired… • Do I have to stay the whole hour to get the free cards…
What Is In Your Wallet??? • 75 activities to do with a deck of regular playing cards, or UNO cards. • 25 reasons why using cards enhances student learning. • Tons of ways to relate these activities to the TEKS!
Let’s Play! • Since, we only have an hour I will go some my favorite games. • I will show you how to play some the games. • And, last but not least SLEEPY, DROWSY, TIRED, DUMBFOUNDED, AND JUST PLAIN EXCESSIVELY HAPPY PEOPLE WILL BE SLAPPED TODAY!
Math clue • Math Clue- give each student a deck of cards or place in a group. Students have to guess the teacher’s number by listening to the clues. The cards must be in the correct place value to receive a point. The 1st person or group to ten wins.
at-TEN-tion • At-TEN-tion Multiplication- Place a pack of Uno cards into one pile. Each player pulls a card, if they need the card place it face down in front of them, if they don’t; they turn it face up in a discarded pile. Continue to go around the table until someone has 5 pairs of cards and the products are greater than 10. When this happens the player yells ATTENTION, turns over all of the cards and wins the game.
Fact Family Reunion • Use UNO Cards and take out the Wilds for this game. Give each player 20 cards. The object of the game is to get four sets that are a fact family. Players begin by pulling a card from the remaining deck, if they can use the card keep it, but if not throw it away (each player must discard a card when it is their turn). The player then lays any sets that may fit in a fact family. Then the next player goes, and this continues until a player gets four sets that equal a fact family. For example, 3+2=5; 3+2=5; 5-2=3; AND 5-3=2; WINS the game.
50 • Fifty- students can play as partner or in a group of three for a faster game. A student deal out all of the cards to each player until they are all passed out. Players cannot look at their cards. Each player lays out a card and adds up the sum of their card with the other. The player that lays the card that gives the cards and equal sum of 50 wins! Students may have to subtract if they go over. Take out face cards or assign a value.
Odd/Even Speed& Mystery on Deck • Odd/Even Speed- Place one odd number card and even number card in the center of the table. Deal the rest of the cards to each player (2 players). Students race to get rid of all of their cards by placing the odd number cards on the odd stack and the even cards on the even stack. The first player to get rid of their cards win! • Mystery on Deck -This is the easiest, yet hardest game for many upper elementary students. First, I take out the jokers, and divide the class into groups of 4. Next, I take 4 cards out of each deck, and then I give a deck to each group. Finally, I tell them to find the cards that are missing! This once took a 3rd grade group over an hour to complete! *Great way to assess problem solving natural ability!
Musical Math Chairs & Advanced Musical Math Chairs • Musical Math- This game is played similar to musical chairs, except that in each chair their two cards. Just like in musical chairs you want to have one chair less than the number of students you have. Just as you start the music shout out a number and when the music stops the student that sits in the chair whose addends equal the sum of the number you shouted out wins! • This game is played just like regular musical math except the teacher may call out the product, difference, quotient, or multiple of number!
Math Slap • Math Slap- is a very addictive game, and I must say, I really enjoy playing it with my students. You need all the cards, but the Jokers (it should be 52). Deal the cards to each player. Do not look at the cards. The person to the left of the dealer goes first. Each player takes turns flipping on card from their pile and placing it in the center (the trash). The goal is to get all the cards by slapping the trash first. Here is want counts as a good slap: • Plus One: You may slap on the face up pile if the top card played is one card value higher than the previous card. • Even: You may slap on the face up pile if the top card played is equal value to the previous card. • Minus one: You may slap on the face up pile if the top card played is one card value lower than the previous card. • Doubles: You may slap if the next card played doubles the previous card. • If you make an illegal slap you give two cards to the bottom of the trash pile. If you make a legal slap you get all the cards in the trash. The player that collects all 52 cards win!
