  1. MetaTrader 5 or MetaTrader 4 will be two of the trading platforms you encounter when you start trading online. These are trading platforms, software packages which allow traders to carry out their trades. These platforms are usually accessible through an online broker platform. MT4 or MT5 is not the only trading platform available. There are many others, but MT4 and MT5 remain the most popular amongst both retail and professional traders. MetaTrader 5 was meant to be the replacement for MetaTrader 4. You might think that it is like choosing between an iPhone 14 or an iPhone 15; an upgrade. This is not the case. It is better to think of it as two different platforms with different designs, features, and target markets. The short answer is that neither platform is objectively superior to the other. Trading Platforms Overview The fintech revolution of the 2000s was a major factor in the shift to online trading. Online brokers began to offer services for both retail and professional traders. These brokers used to offer their own proprietary platforms, many of which are still available today, to their clients. Platforms are software suites fxcm markets that allow traders to access charts, data and educational resources. MetaTrader was first released in 2002 by MetaQuotes Software. It went through several versions before MT4 was released. A number of online brokers added MT4 to their trading platforms in the late 2000s due to its popularity. MT5 launched in 2009. Brokers also adopted it because of its popularity. Almost all major brokerages will offer both MT4 & MT5. MT4 (which was the predecessor of the iPhone) has been around almost 20 years, and MT5 for 15 years. Remember that these are not clunky old software packages. They have evolved over the years through updates by MetaQuotes Software as well as third-party developers using open-source architecture. MetaTrader 6 is not yet available for a number of reasons. MetaTrader 4 MT4 became the most popular trading platform in the world after its release in 2005. MT4 held this title for many, many years. However, in 2021, MT5 overtook it as far as the number of brokers that offered it. MT4 was created with forex trading as its main focus. CFDs can also be traded. MT4 allows you to trade commodities, metals, energy assets and indices. The software is simple to use, and it is popular among those who prefer algorithmic or automated trading. The MT4 community has grown over the years with millions of users. MetaTrader 5 MT5 is more comprehensive in terms of features and tools than MT4. MT5 looks the same as MT4. Both platforms have a similar UX. MT5 has a wider range of assets. Stock trading is a highlight, which MT4 lacks. It offers more charts, drawing tools for charting and indicators built in that can be customized than MT4. It also offers advanced order types, and execution methods. As such, it is an upgrade over MT4. This does not mean, however, that it is objectively better. MetaQuotes is also more focused on updating MT5 compared to its predecessor.
