Shell shock was the reaction of soldiers in World War I to the trauma of battle • described as a reaction to the intensity of the bombardment and fighting that produced a helplessness appearing variously as panic • interpreted as either a physical or psychological injury, or simply as a lack of moral fibre

  5. At the Battle of the Somme in 1916, as many as 40% of casualties were shell-shocked •  A man who began to show shell-shock symptoms was best given a few days' rest by his local medical officer

  6. After WWII, diagnosis of "shell shock" was replaced bycombat stress reaction, similar but not identical response to warfare. • Ten years after the war, 65,000 veterans were still receiving treatment for it in Britain
