This protocol outlines a structured approach for conducting a Collaborative Assessment Conference with a recommended group size of 5-10 participants. The process includes eight steps, beginning with selecting a facilitator and observing student work in silence. Participants engage in description, questioning, and speculation about the work, followed by insights from the presenting teacher. Discussions on implications for teaching and learning take place, culminating in group reflection on the conference experience. This method not only fosters collaboration but also enhances qualitative data understanding.

Collaborative Assessment Conference Protocol Qualitative Data Example Source Protocol recommended group size of: 5-10 people
Step 1: Getting Started • Choose a Facilitator • Student work is available for all participants • No background of work is provided • Participants observe or read work in silence- brief notes on individual observations
Step 2: Describing the Work • Facilitator Asks: • What do you see? • Group members provide answers without making judgments about quality of work or personal bias • If a judgment emerges, facilitator asks for the evidence on which the judgment is based
Step 3: Asking Questions About the Work • Facilitator Asks: • What questions does this work raise for you? (group members state any questions they have about the work, the child, the assignment…) • Presenting teacher may jot down questions posed but does not answer them yet
Step 4: Speculating About What the Student is Working On • Facilitator asks: • What do you think the child is working on? • Participants bases on their reading or observations of the work, to answer this question
Step 5: Hearing From the Presenting Teacher • Facilitator invites the presenting teacher to speak • Perspective of the student’s work, describing what they see in it, may respond to some of the questions raised, adding information deemed important to context • Comments on anything surprising or unexpected that they heard during describing, questioning and speculating steps
Step 6: Discussing Implications for Teaching & Learning • Facilitator invites everyone to share any thoughts they have about: • their own teaching • children’s learning • Ways to support this particular child in future instruction
Step 7: Reflecting on the Collaborative Assessment Conference • The group reflects on the experiences of or reactions to the conference as a whole or to particular parts of it
