Innovative Ways of Teaching Design gurukulschoolofdesign.com/blog/innovative-ways-of-teaching-design One overriding challenge the education sector constantly faces is to find ways to stimulate growth and encourage innovation among its students. Particularly for fashion and design schools, this means moving away from the current classroom model to newer, more interesting ways of learning. According to researchers, schools that incorporate creative thinking and learning have proven to provide students with the necessary tools and experiences that spur an innovative mindset. To help share some of the vision for a better future, here are a few of the best new principles that all good design schools should be adopting in class: 1. Move to concept and project based learning to overcome the standardised nature of curriculum. Educators can utilise their own knowledge and resources to combine inquiry with accountability to convey ideas in a more meaningful way. 2. Incorporate industry and real world learning by showing students the behind the scenes. A hands-on learning approach that reflects a real-world scenario not only creates a learning experience that students can physically see and feel but it also provides them with a powerful opportunity to discover and spark interest. 1/2

  2. 3. Set up and offer access to industry experts. Human interactions and collaborations are key to helping anyone at retaining information as it allows us to connect a piece of information to a person. Offering students the opportunity to speak and learn from industry experts will remove the barriers to mastering a subject and even encourage collaborations. 4. Mix students from all levels and backgrounds to build a more diverse student body. The many different domains and different goals from a wide array of students will promote healthy discussion and stimulate progress — ultimately helping students become more innovative in their approach and practice. 5. Introduce unconventional learning materials to help students think outside the box and engage more deeply with the lesson. From incorporating TED Talks and experiments to using podcasts and social media, unconventional materials are proven to have a better positive effect on students than the standard textbook or presentation. 6. Create collaborative learning spaces that encourage students to work collectively as a team. Open learning environments with no hierarchy helps students to learn to communicate more effectively and become better collective thinkers and problem solvers! 2/2
