  1. Building an Advocacy Campaign Strategy New Delhi – Aug 2013

  2. “If politics is the art of the possible, then advocacy campaigning is changing what is possible”

  3. Elements of an advocacy strategy

  4. The Suzi Model Every child can do it: • Suzi wants ice cream • Mom knows I ate ice cream last week and she knows my tricks, but dad doesn’t • Dad always feels guilty that he has little time for me because of his work • After daddy comes home I will jump on into his lap and say I miss him so so much, and ask him for an ice cream (with sweet eyes)

  5. Suzi wants ice cream Objective

  6. First find a NERD (or become one)

  7. Mom is tough, dad is easy Power analysis

  8. Playing on Dad’s guilt Message

  9. Campaigning is a Communication Exercise • A conversation between you and stakeholder • A two-way process • Effective motivation needs simplicity and purpose • Start from where the audience is, not where you are • It may involve mobilization of public opinion

  10. The message • It must be a piece of NEW information to the key actors • It must have a convincing argument that, IF THEY GET IT, has the power to change the way they think and act • Is NOT the slogan

  11. The message • We should try hard not to communicate more than one message in a campaign • Once we define our message, we need to repeat it again and again • Always consider the effect of the message if it is YOU who is saying it

  12. Crying on dad’s lap The Platform
