  3. To live in Finland average expense per month would be €500 for single students. This includes rent, food and fun sports or outdoor activities etc. If you like to party or drink alchohol or visit discos and pubs, it would be a little extra :) • For married people, the average expense increases to around €800- €1000 per month. • Rent for single students approx. €250. For a family apartment approx. €450 - €550 depending on size and location • Food would cost approx. €125 - €150 per person per month. Cheaper to prepare at home. • Transportation, mobile recharge and general timepass  •        would be approx. €100 per month Money

Residence Permit based on studies(45 days) • Forms OLE1 and OLE4 duly filled • 6000 euros in YOUR bank account • Student Health Insurance worth 30,000 euros(for 2 years or more of study time) • Acceptance letter of your study programme • Study Certificate of your home institution • IMP: Initiate the Visa process ASAP after you get letter of acceptance Visa and related formalities

Residence Permit on family ties(STUDENTS) • Forms OLE1(spouse) and OLE2 (both)duly filled • In addition to 6000 euros in YOUR name, you need 7620 euros for your dependant expenses OR employment letter to cover atleast 1135 euros per month. • Marriage certificate attested by home department(state government) and Ministry of External Affairs • Details of accomodation(Tenancy Agreement) Visa and related formalities

  6. Cerificate of Enrollment from the University • Extract from Maistraati(If available) • Average processing time is 4.5-6 months. • Find out Finland Consulate near your hometown and apply there.   7. APPLY FOR ACCOMMODATION AS SOON AS YOUR ADDMISSION IS CONFIRMED!!! • In India, every college or University has its own hostel. In Finland every city has its own student accommodation agency. • Helsinki • HOAS, Tampere •TOAS, Oulu • PSOAS, Vaasa •VOAS, Lappeenranta • LOAS etc. • Search for the abbreviations in Google (ex: ’HOAS Finland’) and you will get their official webpage. All living quarters with their locations (on map), rent, deposit amount, facilities, construction date, unique identification code, and application form are provided. Single student • SOLO (One flat with 2/3 separate bedrooms and common toilet/bathroom and kitchen). • Student with family • Family apartment (Similar to flats in India, with Hall, bedroom, kitchen etc in one flat) • Some cities even offer dormitories or studioapartments (One large room with a bed space and a small kitchen in the corner) • Rent depends on size of room/apartment and rent rate per m². • (Rough estimate!!) : SOLO • €180-€250/month, • Family apartment • €400-€600/month or even more. • Facilities: SOLO •Fridge, dining table and chairs, laundry, internet, electricity, hot and cold water, electric cooking range with oven (not microwave oven!!) and in the room: study table, bed (with matress) and cupboard. • Family apartment • No furniture (not even bed)!!!! Rest as above... • (This information is for Tampere city. Please enquire in your particular city about the facilities included in your rent!!!) • Private accomodation agencies • More expensive, need to pay extra for internet, laundry, electricity, water, no furniture provided, websites usually in Finnish language. • Example: www.vuokraovi.com, www.etuovi.com, www.yhkodit.fi or search on google for specific city ☺

Jun to Aug(Summer), Sept to Nov (Autumn), Dec to Feb(Winter), Mar to May (Spring). • Avg. temp- Winter: 0 to -15°C, Summer: 16 to 25°C . • Jacket : water /snow repellant outer lining (NYLON) and POLYESTER inner lining. • Gloves : Woollen (inner) and leather. • Ear covering cap • Thermal wear: inner wear thermals, also called micro fleece. • Shoes: should be impermeable to snow. Thick soles with spikes.  Weather and Winter clothing 

  10. Food in Finland Restaurants in university In university, one time meal would cost approx. 2 to 3 Euros (Veg. and Non- Veg.) Indian Restaurants Indian restaurants are present in almost all the big cities in Finland like Helsinki, Tampere, Turku etc. One time meal (Fixed Thali) would cost you 7 to 10 Euros Cook on your own (BEST OPTION & ECONOMIC ☺ ) It is advisable to carry some basic masala’s that you use in your food at home along with you. All these masala’s or similar one’s would be available in some Asian shops in the city you are coming to but they would be expensive and not necessarily the brand you are used to!! ☺ Common items like Rice and wheat flour are available in super markets along with vegetables etc.

Security • Finland is one among the best secured countries and known popular for its social security.                                                     •  In Finland one could find almost no racism at all and Finnish people act neutral to the foreigners. • At beginning one could find strange with Finnish people because of their shy  but actually they behave quite friendly to others.

  12.         Education system          •Masters Degree consists of 120 ECTS (90 Regular              studies +30 Master’s Thesis)         – Normal student completes 60 ECTS per year.         – 1 ECTS corresponds to 25 -30 hours of work (lectures, exercises, homeworks, project work, reading literature,…)          •Courses are organised as Major, Minor, Elective and             General studies         – More details in your study guide. (You will get it from your tutor, when you arrive here)    •Grades 0 – 5         – 0 implies Fail and 5 implies Excellent          •Practical information         – Register for courses and exams online. (Your tutor will guide you) A tutor is your first friend in Finland when you arrive here.

  13.         Research in universities Significant level of progress of any country depends on its            research expertise and Finland is competing in the world.             Research in Finnish universities is at high level. The level of              Education is high and Professors here are accomplished.             There is an opportunity to continue research after Master's               degree. But, it is case dependent and very much depending on             your background and interests.             Research in Finnish universities are always part of some             projects, so they are challenging and paid by the companies.              A way of starting as a PhD student is to approach the             professor in the corresponding field and showing the              motivation to be a good candidate for that field.

  14.            Research in technical research centre (VTT) • VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland funded by the govt.) is the biggest multitechnological applied research organisation in Northern Europe and third in whole Europe.  •  VTT generally focuses on practical oriented research. •  You may get an opportunity to do research here, however, it depends on the opening.You may get all the necessary information from the following link. • http://www.vtt.fi/careers/

Finnish Language • Afraid of Finnish Language? – Don’t worry • Most of Finns knows English so be relaxed. • A frequently asked question is how easily one can learn this language? • Finnish is worth studying – knowledge of the language is the key to Finnish society and the employment market! • Where can learn Fiinish? • There are very good websites which cater the need of Finnish language learner some of them are. • http://www.uuno.tamk.fi/ • http://finland.cimo.fi/studying_finnish.html • The good websites to translate from either hindi to Finnish or English to Finnish are • http://translate.google.com/ • http://www.sanakirja.org/ • So, start learning Finnish as early as possible!!
