  1. In English, we use phrases like “the pink one” or “ the small ones” when we don’t feel like repeating the noun that we have already been talking about. Ex. Do you like the blue shirt? No, I like the black one. * In French, you can use this technique as well, except the formation of it is different. * You use a definite article (l’, le, la, les) then an adjective. The deal is that they BOTH must both agree in gender and number with the noun that was previously mentioned. ADJECTIVES AS NOUNS For example: If you were talking about a dog (un chien) and you wanted to say the “black one” use “le noir”. “le” because chien is masc/ sing and “noir” because that’s the masc/sing form of that adjective. Ex. The blue one (chemise-f/s) ________________________ Ex. The funny ones (garçons-m/pl) ______________________________

Do you like the white ski jacket? No, I like the black one. Do you like the small sweater? No, I like the big one. Do you like the brunette girl? No, I like the blond one. Tu aimes l’anorak blanc? Non, j’aime le noir. Tu aimes le petit pull? Non, j’aime le grand. Tu aimes la fille brune? Non, j’aime la blonde.
