  3. Allusion – What is it? •  an implied or indirect reference especially in literature - Merriam-Webster online • So what is Poe’s use of Allusion in the previous slide? • The Bust of Pallas • Alluding to Athena, or the goddess of wisdom. • Why does Poe use allusion?

Allusion – Why use it? • Bring a bit of history into the piece • Gain attention towards a topic without direct stating it • Pack a lot into a little sentence • Give well-versed readers an underlying fact while not losing causal reader’s attention or understanding. • “Show off” your knowledge and understanding of literature

  6. Allusion – Personal Usage • Who is A. Castle and why are we reading his quote? • Personal Example – Ethan. • Shows that allusions do not need to be complex • Reference what you know- don’t go above pay grade.

Writing Assignment – Allusion: How Do? • Write one to two paragraphs (or stanzas) alluding to one the pieces of literature listed below • The story of Faust (Selling one’s soul to the devil for a wish) • Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet • JK Rowling’s Harry Potter (Any book you want) • Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby • Or simply pick your favorite novel and use that!
