  3. Establishment of the town • 1846 -Chinese businesses open in San Francisco • 1848 - GOLD FEVER! • 1850-1864 - Chinese migration to U.S. • 1864-1869 - Chinese make up 90% of railroad workers Gold Rush Transcontinental Railroad

  4. Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 • Chinese workers prohibited from entering U.S. • first act limiting immigration • Prohibited their travel for 10 years • Chinese could not become citizens • Worse case of racism since the Gold Rush • Act overturned in 1943. • Click here to read the law

  5. Rebuilding San Francisco • Earthquake and Fire of 1906 • Burned 4 1/2 square miles of the city • 1/2 of city’s population left homeless • Chinatown destroyed • Moved to new location at Fort Point

  6. Chinatown Today • Total population: 14,230 • 8,846 Asian/Pacific Islander • Not just Chinese people • Language: 8,048 speak Asian language
