Trademark Updates and Initiatives

Deborah S. Cohn, Commissioner for Trademarks, discusses the latest updates and initiatives from the Trademark Office. As of now, there are 1,637,520 live registered marks and 407,438 pending applications in the Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS). The office has met or exceeded all quality targets for trademark examination, including a compliance rate of 96.6% for First Actions and 96.8% for Final Actions in FY 2010. New measures are implemented to ensure excellence in office actions, aiming for a 15% compliance target.

  3. Database Information • 1,637,520 live registered marks in TESS (Trademark Electronic Search System) • 407,438 pending applications • One year of the Official Gazette on website • Live records are available in TDR (Trademark Document Retrieval)

  4. Performance 2010/2011 ¹Actual results are within the target range considering the margin of error +/-.5%

Performance 2010/2011 • Quality – correct decision making • FY 2010 - Trademarks ended year slightly under target for First Actions (96.6% compliance) and exceeded target for Final Actions (96.8% compliance) • FY 2011 - targets are 95.5% compliance on First Actions and 97% for Final Actions • New additional measure Excellent Office Actions compliance target is15% • As of the end of the first quarter, we are exceeding all quality targets
