  1. 5.4A Multiplying Fractions Objective: To multiply fractions and mixed numbers. To use fraction multiplication to solve real-world problems.

  2. Warm-Up • Write each mixed number as an improper fraction.

  3. Process 1: Multiplying Fractions • Multiplying fractions is MUCH easier than adding fractions • You do not need common denominators • Multiply numerator by numerator and denominator by denominator • Simplify, if possible

  4. Multiplying Fractions - Sample • Multiply

  5. Practice That last one was kind of hard…is there an easier way? • Find the product

  6. Practice • Find the product

  7. Cross-Canceling • You can simplify the fractions before multiplying. • This will save you from having to multiply larger numbers • It will also reduce the need to simplify the product

  8. Cross-Canceling (continued) • To cross-cancel, find any common factors between the diagonals. Divide both numbers by the same factor Example: 1 1 3 2

  9. More Practice

  10. Multiplying Mixed Numbers • Try this…

  11. Multiplying Mixed Numbers • Before you can multiply mixed numbers, you must first rewrite the mixed numbers as improper fractions

  12. Practice

  13. Practice

  14. Real-World Problem • You are hiking with a friend. The trail is miles long. You have walked around it times. How far have you walked?
