Use a graphic organizer to organize logical ideas for paragraph writing Generate a paragraph using a PowerWriting graphic organizer as a guide Write with focused ideas presented with logic Present an argument in support of observations using PowerWriting as guide for structure Use context clues to determine word selection

  2. Week of Common Core Standards • Reading • 8.RL.1. Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. 18 • 8.RL.2. Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text. 8.RL.4. Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts. • Writing • 8.W.1.b. Support claim(s) with logical reasoning and relevant evidence, using accurate, credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text. • 8.W.1.d. Establish and maintain a formal style. • 8.W.1.e. Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the argument presented. • 8.W.2.b. Develop the topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples. • Career Readiness • CCRA-W.4. Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. • CCRA-W.5. Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. • CCRA-W.9. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  3. Week of Vocabulary • Monday – Collect Vocabulary workbook • Tuesday – none • Wednesday – Review application of context clues to determine word selection. Classwork – Guided application of context cludes for word selection, Complete workbook Unit 1 “Choosing the Right Word” – complete for homework if not completed in class • Thursday – Guided evaluation of “Choosing the Right Word” • Friday – Allow 15 Minutes to create flashcards 1-5 for Unit 3 • The 5 Minute Study Strategy must be done EVERY night for homework. Not only will you master the process of the this strategy you will learn the words for Unit 2.

  4. Week of Reading • Monday – Review pre-reading strategies. Independent application of pre-reading strategies to generate a logical prediction (5 W’s + H) of “Sea Devil” • Tuesday – Guided reading of “Sea Devil”, Guided annotation of text (Observe information regarding characterization and symbolism) • Wednesday – Continue guided reading and annotating • Thursday – Character traits graphic organizer, 1 trait with proof guided by the teacher, one completed with a partner. • Friday – Comprehension quiz of story, read non-fiction partner article “Manta Rays of the Deep”

  5. Week of writing • Monday – Watch Slide Show: PowerWriting Stages. Guided attention to sentence structure. (Characterization graphic organizer in reading will be utilized and PowerWriting reviewed in process of application to literature) • Tuesday – Assign quote of the week; “When faced with death, our need for self-presevration grows stronger”. (Purpose: Connect with “Drummer Boy” and “Sea Devil” – address this in whole class discussion) • Wednesday – Apply Writing Tool #1 to paragraph writing • Thursday – Use of graphic orgaizer to create a 1,2,3,3,2,3,3,1 about characterization (this will be done with “Sea Devil”) Graphic organizer to be completed in class. • Friday – Write a paragraph using PowerWriting Structure to clearly support conclusions drawn about the central character in “Sea Devil”

  6. Week of Grammar • Monday – Writing Tool #1: Compound Sentences, notes, guided application, and practice in English Spiral • Tuesday – Review and practice Writing Tool #1 in English spiral • Wednesday – Combining sentences: Complete work sheet, partial partner work, partial independent work, guided review • Thursday – Independent application of Writing Tool #1 • Friday – Quiz: Writing Tool #1: Identification in text, application in writing
