  3. What does Alberta Learning want? • To know what we are actually doing with our students to help them improve… • Goals: are realistic, specific, achievable, measureable

  4. Realistic… • Know your student – don’t make a goal they can’t realistically finish – don’t make an autistic student leader of glee club • Or your ADHD student sitstill • Or your LD student excelin taking dictation

  5. Specific… • Alberta Learning requires they know our expectations, our strategies, and our follow through • Assume they are aliens who don’t know your school or students - give them a map!

  6. Achievable… • Our students can do anything that they put their mind to, each at their own pace. • Make sure that this goal can actually be achieved in the time you have given them – or at least realistic progress made! • It won’t always work, sometimes they will back track – but you won’t give them an impossible task.

  7. Measureable… • Accountability comes with accounting (aka math) • Set a certain # of periods or class chunks/day – 4, 5, 10 and then write your goals to fit this measurement scheme • You will not monitor every student, every day, every week – but you will monitor a certain number each day or week

  8. Hmmmm…. So what does realistic, specific, achievable, and measureable look like?

Anti-social Behaviour Long term goal: Short term goal: OOPS: Abbygail will play with others at recess by November 2008 BETTER: With adult support, Abbygail will spend one recess with one peer each week until November 2008 OOPS: Abbygail will improve social interaction by June 2009 BETTER: Abbygail will increase from 0 to 10 minutes spent positively interacting with peers by June 2009

Inattentiveness Long term goal: Short term goal: OOPS: Abbygail will improve her attention during classroom instruction by March 2009 BETTER: Abbygail will remove herself from distracting situations 3 out of 5 times per day to ensure she completes 15 minutes of classwork by March 2009 OOPS: Abbygail will sit at her desk for 15 minutes by June 2010 BETTER: Abbygail will focus on class work for 15 minutes before requiring a break 3 out of 5 times per day by June 2010

Independence Long term goal: Short term goal: OOPS: By November 2009, Abbygail will … OOPS: Abbygail will be able to find a pencil by herself by June 2010 BETTER: Abbygail will gain independence in simple routines by June 2010 BETTER: Using her PECS system, Abbygail will be able to complete basic daily routines for pencils and binders without adult direction 3 out of 5 times per day by November 2009

  12. Your turn… We all know someone to bounce wording off of – use them! Check – that is why the IPP goes home before it is signed – if you have to explain what you mean to parents, time to reword Don’t be afraid to update as the year progresses or finish a goal and add a new one before the year ends If it ain’t as measureable as you thought, fix it If it ain’t as specific as you thought, fix it If you get to know the student and now it ain’t achievable or realistic, fix it
