Workshop activity: Group 1 The GBSIoT aim to create a prestigious and distinct identity for both the institution and the offer to our learners.  Question 1: What is it that attracts the young people you work with towards certain post-school destinations/career paths? • Who are their biggest influencers? • What gets them excited? • What makes them rule out certain options/routes? • What do you think the GBSIoTs biggest ‘selling point’ would / could be? Question 2:What are the barriers to students pursuing Engineering and Manufacturing courses/careers? • Consider any curriculum challenges • Consider any cultural/social challenges • How might we attract more female applicants to enrol on such courses? • What support could the employer and institutional partners of the GBSIoT offer to help overcome these challenges?

  13. Workshop activity: Group 2 The GBSIoT aims to attract students from the following 5 target groups that are each underrepresented within the engineering sector: 1. Females 2. People from low participation neighbourhoods (LPNs) 3. People from low income families 4. Ethnic groups of sub-groups 5. Mature and Part-time learners Question 1: How could the GBSIoT equip you to confidently share information about our courses to your students? • Consider any training you might like to receive and the format they could take – online, sessions in schools, a conference on campus etc. • Consider any resources/promotional material/presentations we could create for you • Would online resources help? Question 2: What are the barriers to students pursuing Engineering and Manufacturing courses/careers? • Consider any curriculum challenges • Consider any cultural/social challenges • How might we attract more female applicants to enrol on such courses? • What support could the employer and institutional partners of the GBSIoT offer to help overcome these challenges?

Workshop activity: Group 3 Question 1: How do employers currently engage with your organisation and its learners? • What is the level and nature of employer engagement happening already? • Which employers are actively engaging? • What is the impact of this? Success stories? • What barriers are there, if any? Question 2: What employer engagement models would work best for you? • The GBSIoT employers are keen to engage with schools but find it difficult to access them. What approach would work best? Do the schools need a broker like Aimhigher and Outreach professionals to make it happen? • Given the stresses of the day job, what would work best, e.g. a fixed model of employer engagement that can be factored in to the timetable each year? Is it feasible to factor in a couple of sessions per year? • What mechanisms are there for work experience? • Is there an ideal time to run this sort of activity?
