  1. IEEE 802.21 MEDIA INDEPENDENT HANDOVER DCN: 21-06-0560-00-0000 Title: Mapping FMCA Wi-Fi SIP Reqs to IEEE 802.21 Date Submitted: Presented at IEEE 802.21 session #13 in Denver Authors or Source(s): Rodrigo Donazzolo, FMCA : Steve Searle / Henry Taylor, BT Abstract: This presentation summarises the FMCA Wi-Fi SIP PRD and highlights mappings to IEEE 802.21 activities for further discussion. 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  2. Contents • FMCA Update • Scope of FMCA PRDs • Mapping of FMCA Requirements to IEEE 802.21 activities • Next steps for FMCA/IEEE 802.21 discussions 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  3. Scope of FMCA PRDs • The PRDs are effectively the FMCA ‘building blocks’ for Convergence Services: • Bluetooth CTP • Wi-Fi SIP • Wi-Fi GAN (UMA) • Scope of PRD • User Equipment/Handset • Access Point & Gateway • Network & Architecture • Service Capabilities • Roaming • Built on top of ‘foundation’ Technical Specifications & Standards 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  4. FMCA- Industry Engagement • PRD requirements are the top level ‘building blocks’ • They are not detailed technical specifications or standards • The FMCA are keen to engage with existing Industry Standard Development and Certification Organisations to ensure the support of top level product requirements to the appropriate: • industry standards, • network operator specifications e.g NGN • inter-operability certifications. 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  5. User Equipment /Handset Examples • Product Requirement • The Handset shall provide a common user interface in wireless and cellular modes, which shall be simple and consistent amongst all applications. • When a Handset successfully associates with an AP for the first time, it shall store the association details within a wireless profile. • When using this profile subsequent associations shall be seamless and not require any keystroke entry. • As a minimum, the standard handset battery life shall last for 150 hours of standby and five hours’ talk time. 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  6. Access Point & Gateway Examples • Product Requirement • The Wi-Fi air interface shall be optimised for voice, i.e. voice delay shall be minimised. • APs shall be capable of supporting a minimum of three simultaneous Wi-Fi SIP calls • APs shall support the ability to restrict the number of users that can simultaneously connect. 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  7. Network & Architecture Examples • Product Requirement • Vision of a network architecture compliant with e.g. : • 3GPP IMS, • 3GPP VCC • ETSI TISPAN. • 3GPP2 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  8. Roaming/Interoperability Examples • Product Requirement • Seamless support for international cellular and • Wi-Fi 802.11 service provider roaming. Future PRDs will call for the support of wireless cellular WIMAX roaming & interoperability requirements 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  9. Service Capabilities Examples • Product Requirement • Voice call and data session continuity during cellular to Wi-Fi (and vice versa) handovers and • AP to AP handovers. • Support for Location Based Services • Support for Presence Services 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  10. Mapping of FMCA Reqs to MIH • FMCA has reviewed their PRD Release 1.0 Wi-Fi SIP requirements matrix • It has identified the following areas for discussion with IEEE 802.21 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>

  11. Next Steps • Guidance from IEEE 802.21 on what particular MIH aspects the FMCA should focus on for providing feedback. • How best to provide timely FMCA Contributions into existing IEEE802.21 activities. • Example: • Discussion on how MIH IE’s can support FMCA product requirements for seamless handover and service continuity. 21-06-0560-00-0000 <Insert DCN Number>
