All four parts • Attribution • Limitation • Integration • Documentation In a recent study on the effects of coffee drinking, researchers at the National Institutes of Health foundthat one cup per day “was associated with a 6% lower risk of dying among men and a 5% lower risk among women” (Gardner).

  3. The Situation A teacher asks you to analyze President Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address and to consider the Republican response to that Address in your analysis.

  4. Ideas, ideas, ideas • The economy/the recession • Manufacturing • Jobs and unemployment • Tax policy • Energy issues • Education issues

  5. Your Plan To show how President Obama persuades his audience to be optimistic about the potential for change in this country. He accomplishes this goal by using hopeful and positive language to describe his vision for: • the energy crisis • the economy • education He also uses negative and pessimistic language to describe the ideas of his opponents and his predecessors.

  6. An Important Passage From Pres. Obama’s 2012 State of the Union Address: “We’ve subsidized oil companies for a century. That’s long enough. It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that rarely has been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that never has been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits. Create these jobs.” Which words and phrases would you use from this?

  8. Put it all together • President Obama described government subsidies of the oil industry as “taxpayer giveaways” and said that it is time to “double down on a clean energy industry that has never been more promising.” And-- • Mr. Obama called on congressional leaders to “Pass clean energy credits” and almost begged them to “Create these jobs.”

Put it all together “The extremism that stifles the development of homegrown energy, or cancels a perfectly safe pipeline that would employ tens of thousands, or jacks up consumer utility bills for no improvement in either human health or world temperature, is a pro-poverty policy.” --Mitch Daniels, Governor of Indiana Write two sentences in which you use phrases from the passage above. Remember all four of the principles we have covered: (Attribution, Limitation, Integration, and Documentation).

  13. Remember • Attribution (Who said it? Who’s that?) • Limitation (What is important or special in the passage?) • Integration (How can the important parts be inserted into your writing?) • Documentation (Where can the reader find the source for the quotation?)
