KEY FACTS: Measles is one of the leading causes of deaths among young children Measles vaccination resulted in a 78% drop in measles cases between 2000 and 2007 worldwide During 2008, measles cases increased again. More than 90% of these had not been vaccinated, or their vaccination status was unknown

WHAT IS MEASLES? • Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that causes: • High fever • Fine red rash • Cold/flu-like symptoms (cough, runny nose, watery eyes) • Complications due to measles: • Pneumonia (infection of the lungs) • Infection of the middle ear = can cause deafness • Ulceration of the eyes = can cause blindness • Brain damage and even death

TRANSMISSION/ SPREAD: • Coughing and sneezing • Close personal contact • Direct contact with infected secretions TREATMENT: • NO SPECIFIC THERAPY IS AVAILABLE! • Ensure adequate nutrition and fluid intake • Antibiotics for eye/ear infection, or pneumonia PREVENTION: • Routine measles vaccination for children • Any person who has not had measles infection, or has not been vaccinated against measles, should be vaccinated

  5. VACCINES AVAILABLE: • MMR - Measles/Mumps/Rubella • Rouvax - Measles alone • (MMR is recommended for women who have not completed their vaccination schedule, • because of the risk during pregnancy).
