  1. GCCC Strategic Plan • Assessment of Options • for Reducing GHG Emissions 1.1 Inventory of sinks with EOR 1.2 Inventory of large-volume sinks 1.3 Inventory of sources 1.4 Inventory of available capture options 1.5 Assessment of risk and liability 1.6 Economic modeling 1.7 Conduct field projects and experiments • Growth toward development • of a CO2 sequestration industry 2.1 Increase industry partnership in GCCC 2.2 Engagement of diverse industries 2.3 Increasing size/capabilities of team 2.4 Increasing capabilities by alliances 2.5 Dialog on policy and regulatory issues 2.6 Intellectual property issues 2.7 Development of appropriate institutions • Communication, education, • and technology transfer

  2. 2.1 Increase Industry Partnership in GCCC

  3. Additional Funding: $9.3 Million ● SECARB Phase II ($4.9 million) Seal testing, migration of fluids, stacked storage ● SWCARB Phase II ($1.2 million) Long-term injection, water quality, effective practices ● FutureGen ($2 million) Clean Coal Foundation, Regional Data Base ● Frio II ($1 million) Quantification of dissolved and trapped CO2 in brine ● Carolinas ($80K) SE US storage potential, variety of areas and basins ● SECARB III ($80M) Full –scale injection natural to captured CO2 ● Jackson School Match ($100K) Additional GCCC Personnel

  4. 1.1 Inventory of Sinks with Economic Offset (EOR)

  5. 1.2 Inventory of Large-Volume Sinks (Brine-Bearing Formations)

  6. Power Plants Pure CO2 sources Oil and Gas (USGS) Coal (USGS) Brine Aquifer> 1000m 1.3 Inventory of Sources Source: Gulf Coast Carbon Center

  7. 1.4 Inventory of Available Capture Options FutureGen Regional Screening Parameters Discussions with source industries Participation in Clean Coal Foundation and FutureGen Discussions of flooding options (N2, CO2, etc.) Activities in 2006 to continue to monitor development of capture options

  8. Objective: CO2 sequestration is a feasible option or liability reduction, permitted without undue burden 1.5 Assessment of Risk and Liability of the CO2 Sequestration Industry Conducted under DOE funding Study focuses on Gulf Coast issues including wells and faults BP, Praxair, Schlumberger Participants in Frio I

  9. 1.6 Economic Modeling ●Research questions to develop a viable CO2 sequestration market: What pathways lead to commercialization of CO2 sequestration? What is the most advantageous source-sink-pipeline evolution geographically and through time? ● Future activities in 2006: Work with CEE and visiting energy economist to incorporate GCCC reservoir data into a commercialization scenario.

  10. 1.7 Field Demonstration Projects and Experiments Frio I Pilot Reservoir model Knox/Yeh, BEG Injection interval BP, Praxair, Schlumberger Flow Simulation TOUGH2, Doughty, LBNL

  11. 1.7 Field Demonstration Projects and Experiments Frio II $1 million funding from DOE USGS, 4 Nat’l labs contributing research Schlumberger, Praxair Objective: Improve quantification of two-phase and dissolution-trapping mechanisms leading to permanent CO2 storage

  12. 2.2 Engagement of Diverse Industries Outreach Activities Workshops Sponsored meetings and technical conferences Pilot Experiments Texas FutureGen, regional database
