The Language Assistants Programme • The Language and Culture Assistants programmeis coordinated by the Spanish Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Spanish Comunidades Autónomas (regions) and the educational authorities of the participating countries. • It gives senior university students and recent graduates an opportunity to visit Spain and become acquainted with the Spanish education system, teachers and students, while sharing with them aspects of your own language and culture.

  21. What type of schools can I go to? • Elementary schools (3-11 years old students) • Secondary schools (ages: 12-17/18) • "Escuelas Oficiales de Idiomas"(Government language schools) (14-...) These schools are located in all the regions throughout Spain.

  22. Do I qualify? - Requirements • You must be an Australian citizen. • You must be a university senior student or already in possession of a Bachelor Degree, Master Degree, or any other postgraduate degree. • You must be of sound mental and physical health and must have no limitations that would impair your ability to teach. • Have a clear police record. • You should have at least a lowerintermediate knowledge of Spanish.

Do I qualify? - Merits Candidates can improve their applications by having the following merits: • Additional degrees other than those required to participate. • Accredited diplomas of Spanish (DELE or others). • Knowledge of other languages in addition to English and Spanish. • Spanish teaching and methodology courses. • Experience living, working or studying abroad. • Prior teaching experience.

  24. Timing? – The school year in Spain Each autonomous region has a slightly different calendar. Roughly, September to June.

  30. Documents to submit (1) A printout of the application form signed and provided by PROFEX. Electronically submitted documents: • One copy of a valid passport. • One passport sized photograph. • One official copy of academic transcripts. If the applicant has already obtained a university degree, they should include a copy of this, along with the official academic transcript. • A testimonial letterfrom a teacher written in Spanish/English. • A 300 words essay or statement of purpose, signed and written in English or Spanish, explaining the reasons why the applicant wants to participate in the program. • One copy of each document that speaks to the applicant’s language skills and any other additional merit.

  31. Documents to submit (2) • One photocopy of a police report issued by the police department of the of the city in which the applicant has resided for a period of at least six months within the last five years. The police report should be issued within six months prior to submitting the visa application. • One photocopy of a medical clearance (or GP letter) that has been issued within six months prior to sending the application. The medical clearance should indicate that “the applicant does not possess any mental or physical illnesses that will impair him/her from completing his/her duties as a language and culture assistant in Spain”. The deadline for submitting applications is 2 April, 2013.

How are the candidates selected? • The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in Australia will be responsible for the selection process. • Every applicant that obtains a scholarship will be notified individually by e-mail. The scholarship recipients will be asked to provide a written acceptance or renunciation of the scholarship, through PROFEX. • Once the applicant’s acceptance is acknowledge, the recipients will be sent Instructions to apply for a visa. (Applicants who have a UE passport do not need a visa) • Candidates selected will obtail a student visa.

  33. Duties and obligations • The candidates selected will work under the supervision and guidance of a classroom teacher. • The weekly requirement of the assistants is a minimum of 12 class hours (in some regions it could be up to 16 hours), all of which are spent assisting the classroom teacher with conversation activities and practising oral skills with students.

  34. Duties and obligations (2) The assistant and the classroom teacher may agree upon other tasks such as: • attend meetings, • give talks and presentations, • participate in extracurricular activities, such as field trips, school exchanges, school plays, concerts or sports tournaments.

  36. Is it possible to start in January?(5-month program)? Yes, it is! You must apply again through PROFEX and send your application together with the same documents: • In mid-November you will be offered to choose among available positions. • You need to start in school in January 8 approx. • Once completed this period, you can renew for another school year.  

  37. Is it possible to continue my experience?(Renewals)? Yes, it is! You must apply again through PROFEX and send your application together with the following documents: • letter of motivation of no less than 300 words. • report or letter of recommendation signed by the principal or head teacher of the school. • once completed, printed and signed, the application must be sent to the central office in Madrid or the local offices in the regions.
