  2. Introduction • What separates Biblical Christianity from all other “religions” is the written word of God as a final authority. • The word of God is necessary for Christian growth and governance.

Bible Facts • 2 Tim. 3:16 – Human authors wrote each portion of the Bible by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. • The Bible came not by the will of man (2 Peter 1:21), and yet God chose to use over 40 authors to pen each book of the Bible. • God’s word will never pass away (Matt. 24:35) • The Bible is one book made up of 66 books.

  4. Bible Facts • The Bible has two main divisions – the Old Testament (39 books) and the New Testament (27 books). • The Bible is holy, and perfect, with no errors. It is both inspired and preserved by God (Psalm 12:6-7). • 1189 chapters in the Bible • 31,102 verses in the Bible

What the Bible Is • God’s will or testament to men of all ages, revealing the plan of God for man here and now, as well as eternity. • A record of how God dealt with man in the past, how He deals with us in the present, and His will for us in the future. • The Bible contains history, geography, poetry, hymns, laws, proverbs, parables, riddles, allegories, prophecies, record of births and deaths, mysteries, adventure, recipes, blessings, cursings, and other forms of human experience.

  9. How we got our Bible • The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, with a few portions written in Aramaic. It was completed about 350 B.C. • The New Testament was written in Greek between about 30 A.D. to 95 A.D. • Through 3,000 years God has preserved over 5,000 copies or portions of the Greek text. • From those copies God dispersed his word into the major languages of the world. • 1456 A.D. Gutenberg produced the first printed Bible in Latin

  10. Our English Bible • Our English Bible is the result of some 1,200 years of life-threatening work, starting in 700 A.D. when small portions of the Scripture were translated into English. In 1382, John Wycliff translated the first complete Bible into English. He was excommunicated for this, and after death, his bones were burned. • William Tyndale finished the New Testament, and 5 books of the Old Testament by 1530. He was burned at the stake, Oct. 6, 1536.

Our English Bible • 1539, the Great Bible was published • 1560 the Geneva Bible • 1563 (revised in 1568) – the Bishop’s Bible • In 1609 the Catholic Church produced the Douay Version, which is the bases for their versions today, and based on totally different Greek manuscripts than previous English versions

  12. Our English Bible • 1604, King James of England authorized 47 men to produce a complete English version without Catholic influence. It was completed in 1611.
