Learning Objectives • By the end of the lesson, you should be able to: • Identify and label the cellular and tissue structure of a dicotyledonous leaf, as seen in cross-section under the microscope. (from Chapter 5: Plant Nutrition) • Identify the positions and explain the functions of xylem vessels, phloem (sieve tube elements and companion cells), in transverse and longitudinal sections of unthickened, herbaceous dicotyledonous root and stem, under the light microscope. • *Recognize xylem vessels, sieve tubes and companion cells in transverse and longitudinal sections of monocotyledonous root and stem. • Draw plan diagrams of tissues (including a transverse section of a dicotyledonous leaf).
